I recently agreed to rent 100 points for a 2006 vacation to someone who agreed to pay their deposit to me upon confirmation, but I never received this, even though they claimed to have paid via Paypal. They were newly registered to Disboards and I dont know whether they made a mistake with banking or what. I am so frustrated as I have rented points many times to other Disers who have been long time members of the boards is this common ? I have had to turn others away who could have used the points. :confused3 Is Paypal so difficult to use ?

Set an ultimatum. If this is a rental, you still own the points and control of the reservation. It is up to them to contact Paypal and find out where the funds are, not just sit idle and "wait".

If they do not meet the timeline you set out (ie. Tuesday at 5pm, which would give them a few days), cancel the reservation and rent to others.

I hope this helps. Don;t be out your Points, you paid good $$$ for them!

I agree. It's their problem, not yours, if their payment doesn't go through.

They may be new and encountering difficulties, and a learning curve, but it's their obligation to fix it. I'd be understanding that they may experience difficulty getting it straightened out with Paypal on a holiday weekend, but if they haven't fixed it by Tuesday, I'd move on.

I don't know how long this has been, but doesn't Paypal have a verification system for new members?

I remember them having to send a penny to my bank to verify the account. I don't remember how long it takes though or if you can set up a transaction before the verification process.

I agree with everyone else. The renters need to do the checking with Paypal.

I sent them the invoiceon the 15th August...I think that would have been plenty time to pay :confused3

Yep, that's PLENTY of time. I'd follow On Medic's advice. Give them a very short ultimatum.

Considering the difficulty you've already had just getting the deposit, I think I'd tell them the ressie will be canceled unless they have paid in full by 5 PM, xx-xx-2005.

There are other renters out there.

If I can just interject with a note of frustration regarding Paypal. I am currently in the process of renting some points from a member and have been trying for the past week to become 'verified' by Paypal so that I can pay her. The process is not nearly so quick and easy as Paypal would like you to think. Luckily the member I am working with has been the soul of patience. (Although I would expect her to cut me loose if I'd been trying to sort this out since August 15.)

I'm surprised Paypal does not demand to know my height, eye color, and weight. They now have every other bit of information about me. I believe Paypal and it's owner, e-bay, are bent on world domination. :p

If the renter was having trouble being verified by Paypal they should have contacted me sooner to explain this instead of fobbing me off saying payment was made or would be made on xx day. I will indeed cancel the ressie now. I think I have been more than patient.

Our pay pal account took at most 2 weeks to confirm. I don't even think it was that long. If you have been waiting this long chances are they are not going to be forthcoming with the funds for the trip. Cut yourself free from this rental and go to somone else I am sure there are many others in need of points that would be happy to rent from you.

I use PayPal all the time for auction sales. The person can send you money without being verified. They don't even have to confirm their address. If they send you money without these things, you lose seller protection that PayPal offers. PayPal will guarentee payment, which is nice, as long as their address is confirmed. And PayPal will ALWAYS send you a receipt and payment notification, even if payment is pending and has not cleared yet. So, if the guy paid you, the record will be sitting in your PayPal account when you sign in. If it isnt there, he has not paid.

It is also wise for the seller to have a PayPal account that is verified and confirmed - it adds credibility.

Anyway, if a person has a credit card, a payment can be made ASAP. There is no waiting period, and a reciept of payment would have shown up by now - which is why PayPal is nice when you are selling or buying. Both parties can see whats going on.

Sign in and check your PayPal account, if there is no transaction from that person in your account history, he never sent payment.

Sorry but that is incorrect. Paypal told me this week that I could not send more than $39 without being verified, and all I wanted to do was put it on an established credit card. I also have 100% perfect feedback on e-bay, but it makes no difference.

BTW, I'm not sticking up for the person who apparently is trying to shaft the OP. But getting paypal to work, unless you are already in it, is a hassle. And try getting a live human there to answer a question.

Have very little experience with paypal - but it took no time at all for them to charge me when I sponsored this forum? Not sure if I was ever verified, but can assure you within hours my cc was charged.

At some point I'll learn more about paypal, but this was my first dealing with them.

I agree. Give them an ultimatum deadline time and date. I do know that when I rented points from a member of this board, I sent the payment and then she emailed me asking if I had send it. Well, it turned out I had added an extra letter to the email address. Boy, did I panick. I checked paypal and it was unclaimed, so I cancelled it and resent to the correct email address.

Did you insist on PayPal? Why can't they send you a cashier's check or a money order? They also have the option of using Western Union online with a credit card.

I say give them one more chance and set a deadline. I would also ask for payment in full. If they don't meet the deadline you can cancel and move on.

I have made eBay purchases a number of times for amounts in the hundreds of dollars and have never been verified. PayPal has always immediately accepted the credit card payment without any issue and provided me with a confirmation email within minutes of the transaction.

That's great Doc in your case....but that's not what has happened this week. I really do not want Paypal to have my bank account information, but it seems I have little choice, as they will not allow me to pay this large charge, even though it's a drop in the bucket on my credit card, without being verified. What can I say...paypal sucks. :rolleyes1

JoePoe I get confirmation immediatley for transactions I was just refering to the inital set up and confirmation when they deposit like 30 cents to your account or whatever ammount it actually is. I use Pay pal not all teh time but quite often and CC payments were made immediatly even before they confirmed all my info and for the ammounts in the 4 digit range.

One thing that may have happened is that they sent payment to the wrong e-mail address. This has happened to me when selling on ebay several times. They leave out a letter or put in one too many letters and the paypal payment goes to a non-existent account and just sits there. When this has happened the payment sender can recall the money and send it to the correct account (as long as the money hasn't been claimed by someone else).

Just another possibility.
