OK, so DW was packing some stuff early and we noticed that her bathing suit (custom cut) had some "weak" areas where it looks like the fabric had half melted away

We are trying to figure out if was from the pool chemicals at OKW Main Pool or OKW Hot Tub or VB Main Pool or VB Hot Tub, and no it was not from kids spilling something or something else odd like bad detergents for example (handwashed with cold temp hand washables soap)

It is somewhat important since she is having another one made and we do not want to see that one ruined as well

Anyone have a similar experience?

thanks

had it happen to me at a hotel Close to the Grand Canyon.
I had decided on an early morning swim just after the pool guy had finished .
By the time I had completed one length the pool had turned red from the colour of my shorts.
Certain fibres are very sensitive to chlorine ,eg. nylon and certain elastomers.

it is the hot tubs that do this.... (ie destroy the swimsuits, my hubbies too, a nylon nautica, suffered greatly from the hot tubs).

THis was at the Beach Club.

I haven't had any problems with the pools, but try to keep a "junky" swimsuit for hot tubbing.

While I haven't had any problems with my swimsuits, other than normal wear and tear, my Mom had hers shredded from sitting in the hot tub. The seats are rough texture, and with the chemicals, it destroys some fabrics. Yes, get an inexpensive suit, if possible, for the hot tubs. You may also try sitting on a pool towel instead of directly on the seat.

I had a hot tub incident where I noticed my bathing suit that was originally hot pink--had become considerably lighter from the chest down (right at about water level height) !! now I always pack a spare!

We own a hot tub and DW has found that she must immediatly rinse her suit after she gets out or she also has a problem with the Lycra losing its strength. :smooth:

That's what I was thinking...I always take a shower after being in the hot tub or pool with my suit on because I noticed some years back that fibres were breaking & weak points were forming. Or you could just rinse it in the sink. But rinse it! Sea water doesn't have the same issues.

The chemicals in a hot tub are so much more potent than the pools. You can just smell the vapors rising from the hot tubs!! Yes, the seats are rough and cause pilling on your bum side. For some reason I cannot tolerate the hot tubs anymore. Last time I was in one I got out and I felt like my heart was going to explode. Like it was beating 500x a minute and I was really shaky. I don't have any medical conditions but maybe this is a sign of one?????

I have never had damaged done to my swimming suites.

I thought you were only surpose to be in the hot tub for 15 minutes MAX.

this damage is happening that fast?????

I always wash out my suit as soon as I take it off.

My favorite suit deteoriated over time with several weak spots. The chemicals definitely eat away the stretchy fibers in the suits. On our last trip in Sept, I literally threw my suit away on checkout day:p

.... simply take the suits off before entering the hot tub. Trust me, all the men at the tubs are gentlemen, we would never peek.

Thanks to all for the info - this was as we suspected

We do not spend more than 10 minutes max in a hot tub so I think it comes back to if you are going to use one, have a toss away suit or change and wash it asap after finishing

KNWVIKING, I suggested this to DW as well and she stated that she did not want to share with others :jester:

thanks

believe me if I went without mind - you would be asking for me to put one on - some of us should never appear with out clothes....

In a prior life I managed a swimwear dept for a major dept store. HOT TUBS are horrid on women's swim suits. The combination of heat and chemicals just tears them apart. (Actually the same chemicals are present in a pool and if you swim in a suit every day over the course of summer the lycra petty much melts!) The amount of lycra in the swim suit is one of the major factors, so the expensive one's I buy that are "suppose" to make me look thinner wear out faster!

My suggestion is to take the old one for use in the hot tub.

Also, if you feel shaky in a hot tub it could be sign that your blood pressure is too high. GET OUT!!! In my lifeguard career we once pulled a man from a hot tub after about 5 minutes. Major cardiac attack, the EMS guys said it happens sometimes if people have high blood pressure.

Thanks all for the useful feedback and advice

My DW is now well informed on this subject and maybe others know as well to avoid future loss of clothing

:smooth:

Thanks!

CarolA, we are fortunate that we are not buying due to medical reasons - there was a person at the store at the time who was :( and our prayers go out to her for good health

Thanks

shelbyjosh,

The 10 - 15 minute guide for length of time spent in hot tubs is simply a guide and only that. The normal average temperature of hot tubs is anywhere from 101 F - 104 F, again a guide not the absolute rule. The average temperature of the human body is 98.6 F. When the human body temperature goes higher than 98.6 F a condition called Hyperthermia starts to occur. This is why you will feel sweaty (the body trying to cool itself down) more tired than normal (your heart works harder to try and pump blood faster through you body to to cool down through your head, arms and legs). These symptoms do not mean that you may have health concerns, but they are a WARNING of the possibility that problems could and will occur if your unsure of your health fitness.

The temperature warnings near hot tubs are very real and not to be taken lightly, evne more if you don't know what your state of health is reguardless of your age. And especially with childeren, the young ones bodies react much more intense than us when the human body tries to protect itself. Like I said the "guide" is a generic time frame and only you will be able to determine how long you can enjoy the therapy of hot tubs or spas dependent of your state of health.

A quick suprise to add, next time you enjoy that bath at home or on the road, stick a thermometer in that water if you enjoy them "hot" baths. You'll be suprised how much higher the temperature of water you enter is compared to the industry "standard" of hot tub spa temperature is set at for units today.

And you loved that great feeling to be able to pass out on the bed after a nice "warm" bath - You were really suffering from some level of Hyperthermia. Enjoy the water, just be safe!

I own a hot tub spa myself and no ones suits cheap or expensive have suffered any ill effects from the Bromine treatment that I use and we use it all year round here on Long Island. Yes doing water only rinses does increase the life of fabrics and colors and we do it ourselves. Now the hot tubs and spas at the resorts are sanitized very greatly and with good reason, sitting 6 people in @ 800 gallons of water on a very fequent basis requires this drastic treatment to maintain safe bacteria levels. Picture 25 people in a 12' round pool to get the same effect. The downside is that treatment level does take its toll on your suits, so keep that leftover suit for the resorts and the nice ones for the pool and beaches.

What about taking swim shorts (You coudl get a cheap pair anywhere.) and a T-shirt for the spa instead?

Thsi is interesting. Makes me wonder about all those kids that get in them and swim around. Not safe at all.

I've seen kids putting their heads under water in the hot tubs several times with their parents just looking on. The first several times I saw this I told the kids they shouldn't do this because of the severe chemicals in the tub. Several parents looked at me with the "mind your own business" look on their faces so now I just keep my mouth shut.

Thanks for the health input. DD loves the hot tub but if I am not in there with her, forget it. As for me, I will be sitting around the hot tub and not in it. You cannot believe the scare that put into me. It took my body 30 or so minutes to return to normal. My heart was racing so fast I thought about going to the hospital but I waited it out.
