In my opinion, if it's a milestone birthday AND it wouldn't cause a financial burden, then go onsite! Yes, it's considerably more, but to me it feels like a totally different experience. I was a Harbor Blvd only type person until we decided to "splurge once" onsite. Well, since then, it's been hard to go back!
I think it mostly excites me so much because we grew up without a ton of money, and thus, almost all of my family vacation memories are in motel style establishments. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with a motel, but the Disney resorts just feel special (yes, I know there are much nicer hotels that exist, but we are talking about Disneyland now
).
My personal favorite is DLH. It feels tropical and vibrant. I love the grounds and the openness of having multiple towers vs all rooms in one large building. GCH is also amazing, but I tend to prefer the laidback vibe of DLH more. Also, GCH can get a lot of visitors in the lobby area (which is totally understandable, the lobby is gorgeous), and at times it can make it feel a bit chaotic. I do really like the in room balconies at GCH though.
Whatever you decide, I hope you have a great trip!
