DVC etiquette questions?

Hi all- just got home from a wonderful BCV vacation and have a couple of questions. This was our first trip as we bought a resale last year. Now for the questions-
1. We tend to treat hotels like our own home- put trash in cans, clear counters, clean up messes etc. Before we left our 2BR we put all glasses and utensils we used in the dishwasher and started the cycle. We threw used towels on the bathroom floors and that's about it. What do others tend to do? Now I'm not about to "clean" a room but I won't "trash" one either.
2. How much if any do you "tip" housekeeping?
3. Whats up with Disney toilet tissue- my wife says we're bringing a few rolls from home next trip. AKL had same so it's not just a DVC thing- although my wife said the lobby bathrooms in BC and YC hotels had nicer paper.
4. During our first 5 nights at BCV we didn't hear a sound from any neighbor, but the last night in a studio we had a screaming/running kid next to us and a mother who loved to "count" and disipline by volumn. We were trying to hit the bed early (9:30) as we were getting up at 5:00 to get to the airport. I hate to bang on walls and the kid finally crapped out about 11:00. What do others do?

Thanks, Jean and Bob

My family grew up in the hospitality business so I know how little mousekeeping probably makes. We strip the beds, put all of the towels in a pile, load and start the dish washer, take out the trash, and clean the counters.

I always say I will bring TP from home, but always forget. :guilty:

We usually tip abount $10-20 (which I think isn't enough, but FIL usually comes with us and complains that the fees are too high and I did all of the work) and the spare change that we collected for the week.

Do you strip the pull out if it hasn't been used?

Bobbi :D

When we leave we make sure to start the dish washer with whatever we've dirtied up to that point. If we've used a hide a bed we make sure to leave it out so that housekeeping knows that it was used. That's as far as we go.

As for tipping, if it's a trash/towel day I leave a couple of dollars, if it's a full clean, for a 1BR $5, for a 2BR $7.

We put our dirty dishes in the DW and start it. We put all trash in the bags and carry it out. We put dirty towels in the tub and leave the beds unmade and turned down. Since DVC does not get daily cleaning, we leave a 10 dollar tip when we check out.

I don't complain about noise at Disney unless it's 2 nights in a row and after midnight. I figure people should respect others but it's not going to happen and I can't let it bother me. I stay up late and don't complain about the noise early risers make.

Its almost impossible for everyone's schedules to match.

I think LibertyBelle posted on another thread that mousekeeping has to wash ALL of the dishes and pots and pans. I didn't know that. In the future, I think I will load everything into the dishwasher that will fit!!

We load dirty dishes in the dishwasher, but I don't run it, because I am never sure if they have to wash it again anyway. This way, they KNOW they are dirty and it needs to be run. We put all the towels in the tubs and clean out the fridge and tie up all the garbage bags and replace with new ones. If our room is convenient to the trash closet, I will also carry the garbage and recyclables down when I leave. I leave the beds pulled back, but don't usually strip them. At OKW, the linens for the hide-a-bed are in the master closet, so they will know if they have been used. We usualy strip it and put those linens in a pile on the floor.

What you did is fine. The rooms get a full cleaning between guests. I agree that it's a good idea not to leave a big mess. But there's no expectation that guests will clean the rooms to prepare the room for the next guest.

Housekeeping strips the beds. Some folks on the board have suggested stripping the beds, putting the sheets in the washer, and running it. Please don't do that. Housekeeping sends the sheets to a central laundry where they get a high temperature, sanitizing wash. You're not doing housekeeping a favor by making them deal with wet sheets.

2. How much if any do you "tip" housekeeping?

Disney does not list housekeeping as tipped position. Although housekeepers are paid more than CMs in tipped positions, I'm sure they enjoy getting tips from some guests. Some folks on this board are very generous, leaving $20 or so. Others leave nothing. I tend to leave a $5 bill on a master bedroom pillow as a little thank you. Remember, it's a tip, not a payment for cleaning the room.

3. Whats up with Disney toilet tissue- my wife says we're bringing a few rolls from home next trip. AKL had same so it's not just a DVC thing- although my wife said the lobby bathrooms in BC and YC hotels had nicer paper.

I guess it doesn't bother me, but you're not the first to make that observation.

I would not bang on the walls, nor would I contact the neighbor directly, either by phone or in person. You never know how people will react. Call security or the front desk instead. They've dealt with similar situations before, and they know what to say.

When my kids were younger, we stayed in a 2BR at a Residence Inn. My wife and I were in our bedroom, and we had no idea that the kids were jumping up and down in their bedroom -- until the phone rang with a call from the front desk; it seems the guest below their room complained. I apologized and we talked to the kids. I'm glad the the other guest complained instead of being miserable listening to noise from the ceiling.

We don't pick up much (although we don't leave the place trashed, either). But we do tip a few bucks, especially if we find the rooms spotless when we arrive (which we almost always do). As for noise, I tend to keep my temper but my wife will definitely knock on the wall. It usually works.

As noted above, WDW lists Mousekeeping as a non tipped position. We realize they will make the beds and change out the linen including towels, even if they are clean. WE put all trash in bags including food, unless it's something we think someone else might use. We strip the beds, pile the towels and sheets near the door but separated. If there is anything that's a mess, I've usually cleaned it prior, but this is my last chance to vacuum or sweep anything I think that's not reasonable to leave. I also put the dirty dishes in the DW and usually run them as we're walking out the door if there are enough.

Are extra garbage bags supplied?
There are usually etras in the bottom of the trash cans, if not, you can get extras from the staff.

We don't pick up anything and just leave $40.

We leave $5 on T/T day. Then the day we leave, we don't bother straightening out the beds. We leave the towels in the shower or tub. Dishes go into the d/w although we tend to not have any on our last day. Any food stuffs that are unopened we leave on the counters. Same with unopened water bottles. If they can be taken, fine. If not, they will toss them. We also leave another $5 on the vanity as we leave.

We tend to do as others - tidy up. We do leave the bed unmade, towels piled in the kitchen, etc. We also leave any unopened food that we think the housekeepers might be able to use/keep.
We stayed in a 1bdrm last trip for 9 nights, thought of it as our little apartment (in a great neighborhood !!) and we're pretty tidy folks so that's how we left it.
