when did this board start? Who were the founders? who maintains it now? When did it take off, in participation??
immediately or last 3-5 years? It has so much growth potential,if true, on 1/2 of 1% of all DVC owners, look at it once a month??

This site was very small in the beginning. I found it in the summer of 1997, and it was fairly new, I think. I still think it's the best of all the DVC sites. Pete Werner was the originator, and it took off almost immediately.

does mR werner, maintain this huge dvc board, by himself?
does he need volunteers? is he a retired man??

Their is a lovely dedication on the home page of the DIS boards. If you haven't read it, you owe it to yourself to do so. It will give you some history, too.

I found the board in May of 1998. I think Candace is right... I think it started some time in 1997. Originally, Pete was still living up North, then he moved down to Orlando.

In '98, and maybe even in '99, he actually rented out a Grand Villa at BWV for a Christmas party "meet" for any DIS'ers who wanted to attend. I could always kick myself for not driving over for those...

Ahhhhh -- The Good Old Days!!!!

  • When catching up on all the posts for the day meant reading both of them.
  • When each week you would look forward to the new DVC photo post from Pete
  • When you could easily count all the different posters (although you might have had to use your toes).
  • When PamOKW was still just Pam and we all got a chuckle over the big "Shower Head" controversy.
I could go on and on about the early DVC Board Days.

Ohhhhh - how I miss those Good Old Days!!!!

I'd like to think of myself as one of the "old-timers", even though I didn't register until August, 1999. (Lurked for a long time, first, LOL). Anyway, I remember most of the items on your list, but can't recall the "big Shower Head" controversy. Would love a brief synopsis from someone who does - sounds like fun!

I don't even know how to figure out when I first registered.

I know I was on this board a long time with the old board software. I know it was while I was still in New York...and that is seven years ago. I even remember when Pete used to post regularly, I was actually the first host of the DVC chat on Sunday nights.

When did this board actually start? '96 would be my guess.....only because I think that is when I found it.

Rich I believe that you are right. If memory serves me I found the DIS right before our first trip in 96. There was only one board at that time. We bought DVC in 97 and I met Pete on a DIS meet in 98. I think it was the second ever official meet. It was pretty cool. There was only 8 of us and we took a MK fireworks cruise. It sure was the good old days. Everyone knew each other. And Pete had a hard time keeping us on the subject!:D

I don't think that the registration date that you have on your user will give you any idea as to when you really registered the first time because we all had to register again when he changed servers in 99. That's when a number of people changed their user names.

I agree that Rich is in the right ballpark. I've got email from Pete dated early '99 that talks about the forums going to a moderated format, and my memory says that happened mid '98 (though my email from that time period is spotty, so I can't pinpoint an exact date).

Welcome Home, Scott!!! :wave2:

Your memory is right. The moderated format did begin in mid-1998.

Pete moderated the forum at that time and Scott became the first moderator of the DVC Board in early 1999.

The board has gone thru several upgrades, server changes and software changes since those early days.

Welcome back, Scott! I, for one, missed you when you decided to take a break.
