I don't know if I made this up or if I heard it but can you buy/rent DVC credits? Is that better or worse than just booking a room the standard way?

It is possible to rent DVC points for a stay at one of the DVC properties from a member or from a business that specializes in renting DVC points (for example see David's Vacation Club Rentals for more info). You can generally save some money, but changes to the reservation or cancellations might not be easy. Good luck!

There are a number of differences between booking a hotel room and renting a reservation made on DVC points. You can save money but there are additional risks and trade-offs. Here is some reading material if you are interested in finding out more:

As PP stated, there is a possibility to rent DVC points if available. Currently demand far exceeds supply. It is often, not always, cheaper than booking a normal Deluxe hotel room from Disney.
But you need to do your research and see if it meets your needs.
It is a legal commitment between you and an owner/ broker. You will be asked to sign a contract. Most owners do not allow cancellations for a refund for any reason.
You need to book 11-7 months in advance to obtain most resorts.
You usually pay most upfront.
DVC is a timeshare, not a hotel. As such you do not receive daily housekeeping, fresh towels and toiletries etc.
check out the DVC FOrums here on the DIS for more info

The term "renting points" can be confusing, because you don't actually get any points. :)

What happens is that a DVC member makes a reservation for you at one of the Disney Vacation Club resorts, using their points. You pay per point, by the number of points it takes to make the reservation at that particular resort, for the particular room type and size that you want, in the time of year you want to go.

The three most important things to know are:

1) You'll need to pay most, if not all, of the cost at the time the member makes the reservation. And most rental transactions are not changeable and not refundable. If you think you'll need to move your dates, or you might want to switch resorts, or there's a fair chance you'll have to cancel....renting is probably not for you.

2) As with most timeshares, you'll need to book much earlier than you do with a hotel. Members can start booking their home resorts at 11 months out, and for certain resorts and certain times of year, if you don't do that, there won't be any availability.

3) As with most timeshares, you will not get daily housekeeping unless you pay an additional fee for it. Villas are fully cleaned between guests, of course, but housekeeping services are limited during your stay.

It it cheaper? If you're comparing to the cost of booking the same villa through Disney, then yes, it usually is. Sometimes significantly. If you're comparing to the cost of a moderate or a value, no.

For last year's trip we book 11 months in advance at Boardwalk Villas. Paid $243 a night for 8 days. We used company other than David's. Lynne M has the most important issues listed above.

Great summary Lynne M.
I'd add that whether it is less expensive really depends on what you are comparing (examples -Disney cash room or studio v. DVC rental studio, 1 br. DVC rental v. 1 br. from Disney for cash, 2 deluxe rooms cash from Disney v. 2 br. DVC rental villa) and what discounts Disney may offer. The problem is that there's no predicting what discounts Disney will offer 11 months before your travel dates.
The other big difference particularly in the studio v. room comparisons is the different sleeping arrangements, rooms have 2 beds, most villa studios have 1 bed and a sofa pull out.
