So the time has finally come for me to take the plunge and purchase an AP! I'm super excited that I will have the chance to visit the world three times in this coming year!! But I am a little nervous about how this all works so guidance would be greatly appreciated. Here's the deal:

My parents are DVC members. I currently live away at school, but my permanent address/legal residence is the same as theirs (it's on my passport & driver's license). I'm pretty sure that allows me to be able to get an AP with the DVC discount since I live with my folks. Question 1: Is that correct??

So my mother may or may not be with me on my upcoming trip- we'll see if she can get off work *fingers crossed*. Question 2: Does she need to be with me in order for me to purchase the AP with the DVC discount?

I've heard that I cannot purchase the DVC AP before I get to WDW. Question 3: True?

So if I have to buy it at Disney, Question 4: can I purchase at our resort or must it be purchased at the parks?

Final Questions: What do we/I need to have with me in order for this transaction to take place? Are there restrictions to modes of payment? Do we need certain documentations? Also, are there better places to get it than others (as far as wait times, customer service, etc)?

1. As long as you have a government issued id with photo that shows the same address as the member you are entitiled to the member pricing on the AP.

2. Yes, but there have been reports where a family member had a copy of the members photo id and member card and were able to purchase without the member actually being present. I would not rely on this always being the case.

3. An exchange voucher can be pre-purchased by calling MS or using the member website. This exchange voucher would need to be taken to a guest relations location or theme park ticket window to get the actual AP.

4. At WDW, APs can only be purchased at a Theme Park ticket window or Guest Relations location.

not to hijack this thread, but this is our first time buying the annual pass, does it have to be pre-purchase, or can we just show our dvc cards at the ticket counter and discount will be given? Thanks for the help

You do not have to pre-purchase. You can purchase an Annual Pass at any theme park ticket window or guest relations location. You need your membership card and government issued ids with photos for all adults (ages 18+) showing the same address as the member.

A couple of reason why members do pre-purchase is to:
1. Avoid a price increase. Over the last several years ticket prices have gone up in early August.
2. Spread out the cost of multiple APs by pre-purchasing one exchange voucher every month or so.
