So the DW found a great deal on 5-day tickets so she went ahead and purchased them. No we are wondering whether we could upgrade the tickets to an AP. Is it possible? How would you do it? Does disney look at the value that we purchased the ticket or do they just apply the disney parks cost toward the ticket?

Yes, you should be able to upgrade them. To get the most value for them, use them to enter a theme park first. After you have used them (and before you've used day 5), take them to a park ticket window or guest relations location and tell them you want to upgrade to a DVC AP. Because you've used the tickets at least once, they will give you a credit towards the upgrade that's equal to current gate pricing.

Ok no holding out,,,lol,,,what and where was the great deal,,
As my daughters say,,sharing is caring.
we are looking at a 5 day pass, but might settle for the current 4 day deal and do something else.

Look at mousesavers for a list of discounts. I think my DW's friend got the tickets from undercover tourist, but couldn't use them. All I know is that we saved a over $100 or so on four tickets. We are also planning to buy 10% discounted target gift cards on Black Friday, which can be used to buy disney gift cards. If you combine with our credit card rewards, we will get additional saving, but the gift cards can be used to buy Disney gifts cards and then anything disney and combined with additional dvc discounts again compounding savings.

So how do you know which tickets can be exchanged for an annual pass upgrade at a higher than purchase price? This sounds like a good way to save a few extra bucks on AP's, but also sounds high risk. You'd have to be sure of the ticket exchange and hope Disney doesn't change their policy.

Disney website allows upgrades to tickets. Example we were at wdw a few years ago, we decided to stay an extra day in the parks, so on the third of our five day ticket, we paid the difference for six days. I wasn't sure the policy on a dvc ap, so asked if anyone else upgraded. I don't think you can do every year and not sure it makes sense because renewing ap cost is reduced already. In any case, we had bought the 5-day tickets already, not because we were looking for an additional discount.

UT is where we have always bought our tickets, and sometimes upgraded if needed. To get the full value of the upgrade, Use the original ticket for at least one day then go to guest services and upgrade. They will give you gate value of your tickets.

I was hoping with the OP that there was a new legit site with a better price, but heres to magic.pixiedust:

What type of tickets are not eligible for upgrade?

From Post 15E in the 'Everything at WDW Tickets' sticky:
E. I have a special ticket I would like to upgrade. Can this be done?

The only upgrades that can be done are to regular or Florida Resident MYW tickets, or Annual Passes to a higher level of Annual Pass.

Special Tickets include Touch of Magic, YES (Youth Educational Series) Program, used or unused Special Event Tickets (MNNSHP, MVMCP, NoJ) after the date of the event, any ticket that includes the word “comp”, “complimentary”, "SPORT", or "YOUTH" on it, or has a "not valid before" or a "not valid after" date on it and any tickets that are not sold at the Park Gates cannot be upgraded or modified in any way. The last group also includes most convention tickets. See Post #5 for more information.

If you have a special Convention ticket which includes one WPF&M visit, you may upgrade it only to add days (to a maximum of eight days on the ticket). If you do add days, and have not used the single water park entry, you will lose this entitlement. If you have used the water park entry, you can only upgrade to a Premium Annual Pass. You cannot add other options and you cannot make the ticket No Expire.

From Post #5:
The "After 2:00" & "After 4:00" Convention tickets can't be upgraded.
