DVC annual pass upgrade to premium?

Hey everyone! We have a regular annual pass and I was thinking about upgrading it to the premium. We renew our passes come this September and we're actually going to be down a few weeks before the renewal date is up. So my question is how does the renewal upgrade thing work?

Do I just pay for the upgrade or do I pay the difference and then pay the renewal for the premium? Is it better to let the passes expire and then re-purchase the premiums with the discount?

Also am I able to renew my pass in August instead of September even if I don't upgrade? I wasn't sure how this all worked since this is the first time we've ever had annual passes and with the DVC discount.

Any help is MUCH appreciated! :)

If they are still doing it as they used to, you can upgrade to premium and the amount you pay will be pro rated -- reduced from the annual cost difference between the two passes based on amount of time left on the pass.

Your renewal date will remain as it currently is and likely, if you want, they can issue to you new passes in August while you are there but they will not be useable until your current (or upgraded) pass expires and will run to next Sep.

Thank you so much! I'm just trying to figure out how much money I need to save up for this renewal if we do decide to upgrade. This info is definitely helpful!

Do you know how you get an annual pass with your picture on it? I was shocked last year when they gave us paper tickets to be honest.

I am not aware of annual passes with pictures on them and the paper-type annual passes have been it for many, many years.

Thank you again for the info. I was shocked they only gave paper tickets with your name on it for an annual pass.

I think the AP's are Tyvek based (weatherproof material that they wrap homes with and make those white "bunny" suits you see hazmat workers wearing), so its not "just" paper.

I think resorts can now issue new AP's and they do that on regular KTTW cards, but then the pass just has annual pass typed on it, and would not look as unique as the traditional characters on a pass, and may confuse some CM's when you try to show that for a discount...

If you want to upgrade your current pass to a premium you will have to pay as through you had the premium for the entire year. If you want to renew your pass(starts in Sept on your renal date) to a premium then you will pay the renewal rate for the premium pass.

The passes can be renewed before expiring (within 30 days) but the new passes won't be good until the expiration date on your current passes. You can change pass types at renewal without every having to lose the renewal discount. See the ticket frequently asked questions on the theme park board for any more specifics on this- one of the cm's who works in tickets keeps it current and acurate.

You can renew a pass from 30 days before it expires to 30 days after it expires. You will have to use that information to determine if you can renew it while you are at Disney.
