DVC and Popping it on the weekends

We always split stays and have no issues with it.

Even our first trip to WDW back in '04, we arrrived late at night, rented a car, and stayed close to the airport. Then drove to WDW and checked into the Contemporary the next morning.

Now we split stays to minimize points usage. If I could get the vacation schedule to work for a stay of 6 nights using only one 'premium' weekend night, I wouldn't bother with the hassle of moving. IE, arrive Sat for 6 nights, or depart Sat eve after 6 nights. Two of those 'premium' nights seems to really cut into the points, even at the lower point times of the year...

As the 'packer' in my family, it would not be worth it to me to move. I have three boys (14, 10,10) (four if you count my DH) and none of them pack. When we bought DVC, we first low-balled the points, but, it only took me a few days at home with my points chart to figure out I needed more points. We increased before the ink was dry and bought enough for a two-bedroom for a full week for most every time of the year.

You really need to decide what is important, for me, I would not want to waste a minute of my vacation packing, unpacking, packing again, unpacking again. (That does not include the pre-trip packing and post-trip unpacking :scared1: )

If you really want to experience a different resort, try putting it at the beginning or end of your trip, this way you only make one move.

That is exactly what we do.

Actually the studios for weekend are not that bad. We have done that before. A bargain at the value times of year.;)

We usually stay in a 2 bedroom villa at the Beach Club, and staying over the weekend is point pricey, so we sometimes stay Friday and Saturday nights at the Hard Rock Hotel over at Universal, BUT when you think about the fact that it's 250 per night to stay there....it is NOT a good deal unless you plan on actually going into Universal and using the front of the line passes.

In my opinion, if I had to move to save money, I would try to just book a studio at the same resort. That way, it is an internal move, and you don't need to worry about schlepping to another resort.

It really comes down to personal preference. For me, packing and checking in is an entire day affair. A whole chunk of the day is gone. I would rather check out of a 2 bedroom bcv, hit the parks, and come back to a bcv studio where my luggage is waiting for me.

There are all sorts of scenarios...you just have to choose the one that you feel would work for your family.

Good Luck!

We're going to split our stay with two nights at the Dolphin or Swan, we can pay for them with our Aeroplan (Air Canada) points plus we don't get charged the taxes we normally do with flights. If you have Airmiles or another reward card it might be worth checking out.

We are going to stay Fri night (arriving late) at Pop. We're just packing a one-night bag. Then can we go and check into AKV that morning, store our luggage (as I know room won't be ready)? I was hoping to check in prior to 9:00 and head to AK for the day. Will they let you do this?

Yes, they will let you check in as early as 7am so that you can get your park passes & be on your way.

We did the same thing in May (stayed at Pop on Friday night) except then we switched over to SSR. We had called from Pop to see when we could check-in the next day...they said 7am.

**And yes, that is a good plan!

I stayed 4 nights at POFQ (free dining) over a weekend last year and then did the BCV. It was ideal. Granted there were only two of us but I used the switch to make a laundry bag etc and organize a bit for the last leg of the trip..
