Does anyone know what the duty is on liquor if you go over your limit? ! Also, do they confiscate if you do not decare it? I have friends that want me to bring them some back fro St Martin, but I do not want to end up in jail or broke:earseek:

Duty is only a couple dollars, but quite frankly unless you are bringing a LARGE quantity back, they seem to rarely bother to collect. LAst week we brought 6 bottles of Guavaberry back from St. Maarten, and the customs agent looked at my form and said, "You owe nothing - thank you.". Similarly, in June we brought 8 bottles of Callwood's rum from Tortola through customs in San Juan, and the same thing happened.
WHATEVER you do, DEFINITELY declare it. They get very nasty if you don't, and will go beyond just confiscation - fines can be substantial.

Who know's what they might do (and where they might search for other hidden contraband! ) The duty amount is very small per bottle and I think you are allowed a liter or two per adult in your party so you might be able to cover it anyhow. Just tell your friends they will have to pay the duty also on the bottles. If I recall it was only like $1.50 or 2.00 per bottle and who knows they might waive it for you

They do not charge you if your duty fee comes to less than $10 (at least I think that's the amount). So, while technically only your first liter is duty-free, if you may not have to pay duty, depending on how much you bring back.

Definitely declare everything.

The US Customs website has a good brouchure at: http://www.customs.gov/xp/cgov/travel/vacation/know_brochure/

This answers a lot of questions about duty.

I was not going to not declare, just wondering what happened as I have never seen this been an issue.

I will declare it and pay the duty, didn't realize it was that small!:D
