Has anyone ever gone over the 'duty-free' limit of alcohol that they brought back on their cruise?

Just wondering how much the extra duty/taxes are for each bottle.

No! I usually drink it all before returning home. :teeth:

LOL, yep, we have gone over on every cruise. As long as the taxed amount you are over is less than approx. $10, they have told me every time, thanks for coming down..you don't need to pay anything. If we would have to pay anything, it is pennies on the dollar basically. I always keep some cash set aside, as the extra tax would have to be paid in cash, but have never had to use it. Not on the 7 night western, 3 night bahama or 14 night panama. And, yes, we were definately over by more than one bottle :rotfl2:

We were over by a few bottles and like Webray, we did not need to pay since the total duty was less than $10. I believe that it is a percentage of the cost you paid for the alcohol. I'm afraid I don't remember what the % was - may 7.5% or 10% ???? Since the reason we bought it was the good prices, the duty just didn't add up to that much.

I believe the duty free limit varies by what islands you visit, and if they are USVI or now. ALso I think the duty if you go over on alcohol is about $1 or $2 a bottle, still worth it if you can carry it!

soooo, your saying ... buy as much as you can carry!! :worship:

My understanding is that the prices are pretty good compared to here in the U.S. Do they have a good variety, or is it pretty much rum?

What's wrong with rum? I plan on getting a lot if it's a good deal especially some guava-berry rum. Of course I would by rum by the keg if I could.

i confess-we went over our limit by about 20 bottles :bitelip: we had just bought an oak bar for our home and i wanted to stock it, so i brought along a cheap footlocker from target and filled it (cushioned with clothes and bubble wrap). i claimed every bit of it and did'nt pay over $10.00. if you are fond of a particular liquor (or want to give these as gifts) you cannot beat buying them while you cruise. i still have several bottles left (circa 2001) of the fu-fu stuff like godiva and grand marnier so my purchases will not be nearly as high on our next trip..............unless i find the scotch my hubby drinks, and i decide to stock up on jack daniels :goodvibes

happy cruising.

p.s. our cruise was just post 9/11, we got selected for a random luggage search.....boy those tsa guys were laughing and rolling their eyes as they had to inspect every bottle :rotfl:

Depends on where you are going as far as variety. In Nassau the variety is excellent..we had three adults in our party and we stocked up..lol. Everything..plus rum..lol.

In Mexico..we stock up on tequila..lol.

I buy mine in St Marten, the liters of Absolut, Flavored Stolees, and Cruzan Rum are around $5, as compared to $20 here! St Thomas is more expensive (around $8-$9 a liter) but still good. Not sure about the Western destinations.

That is very good to hear since we are going on the Eastern .... first stop ... St. Maarten! Do they have fork lift rentals at the dock so I can get it all onboard? :rolleyes1

I'm looking to stock my bar too. We have 3 adults and I was worried about how I could carry everything back home. The bubble wrap is a good idea. I think I will try that.

Thanks!

i also plan on stocking my home bar.....in st. maartin are the prices on liquor cheap next to the ship or do you have to go further in? WHere do i buy this famed guavaberry rum??? :flower:

You can purchase liquor in St Maarten right whewre the Magic docks, but it is more expensive than what you will find in town.

Also, be sure to check out the liquor deals available on board. Each day, a different liquor is featured and available at a discounted rate. I usually stock up on the Crown Royal onboard, good deal and easy to pack for the trip home.
