My two kids are now 18 and 20 so although they obviously cannot drink alcohol in the states yet are they allowed to get some duty free at the airport and bring it back into the UK?
Or rather am I allowed to buy it at MCO and then they claim it as their allowance when entering the UK?
since they're over 17 they're allowed to bring alcohol as part of their allowance.
I don't think there is a limit as to what you can buy at the duty free shop, so just buy everything on your account
and if you're asked by HM customs, your kids will have their own allowance
now there's a thing you might want to consider
If you're travelling direct, then it's no issue, as long as you buy the alcohol after security
but if you fly indirect, purchasing the duty free at MCO could be tricky.
you won't have your suitcases, so you'll need to carry the bottles with you.
If you connect at an US airport, you won't have access to your suitcases. And if you have to go through security again (like at JFK on some connections) then security there will confiscate the bottles.
If you're in such a situation, you might want to wait until at your connecting airport to purchase alcohol, just to be sure you won't have to go through security with "liquids".
just for the record

You can bring in either of the following (but not both):
1 litre of spirits or strong liqueurs (over 22% alcohol)
2 litres of fortified wine (eg port, sherry), sparkling wine or any other alcoholic drink thats less than 22% alcohol
Or you can combine these allowances - so you could bring in 1 litre of fortified wine and half a litre of spirits (both half of your allowance).
You can also bring in both of the following:
16 litres of beer
4 litres of still wine
