Your new neighbors have a large dumpster in front of ther house as they are renovating before moving in. Is it all right for you to put garbage in it? I just saw their tenant put a couple of bags in it. Our sanitation men didn;t take a piece of wood this morning from our house. No ieas why as it is recycle day too. Im tempted to put it in the dumpster. BAd idea or not?

I would ask before I put anything in the dumpster. If it were my dumpster I wouldn't have a problem with you putting one piece of wood in it, but I would appreciate the courtesy of you asking.
We have had to rent two of these dumpsters for tennets moving out of family owned property. Not only do you pay to actually rent the dumpster itself, we had to pay for what was placed in it based upon weight.

Yeah, I would ask.

Better to ask and be told no...then to be caught doing it without asking. KWIM?

You really shouldn't put your garbage in there. One reason, they have to rent those dumpsters. It becomes full, the contractor or owner may have
to buy another to fit the stuff that was actually was suppose to go in there.

We found this out because our neighbor asked if they could put old wood fences in our dumpster while our house was being renovated. My DH said no
for those reasons.

I am so glad you asked - and the answer is NO. You have to pay by the weight if you go over the amount of weight they permit in a dumpster. For example, I had a one ton dumpster and it went over by 76 pounds b/c some jerkoff put a tub in it when I wasn't around and not looking. I actually reported it to the cops b/c it is considered a theft of services.

Definately ask first. While I wouldn't mind letting you put some stuff in it, if I saw you doing it without my permission, it would tick me off. So, either ask or sneak it in without being seen :rotfl2:

I wouldn't without asking. Those things cost between $250 and $500 for a WEEK. I would not be happy if I was paying that kind of money for others to use.

I wouldn't ask because I wouldn't want to do that. Those dumpsters are by weight. I would not be happy if someone even asked to allow something in there as it would look rude to deny them.

No, don't do it without asking, as everyone else has said. And don't be shocked if they say no. Think about it, the neighbors see you, they dump their stuff, and before you know it, it's overweight.

Oh, and don't take stuff out of it either. When my sister had a room added to her house and she had one of those out on her driveway, people were climbing in to take stuff out! And what would have happened if they got hurt? She had to stand out there and watch (and she was 7 months pregnant at the time)

NO!!

Bad etiquette indeed.... these people have a dumpster for a reason, for their stuff! They have to pay by the pound when this thing gets emptied too... so not only are outsider's taking up space in the dumpster, these people are responsible for paying for the weight when dumped... and not only that, if you put something in there the disposal company won't take, the new neighbor's have to figure out what to do with it!!!

THIS has happened to us!! Bad etiquette indeed!

Definetly ask.

Dumpsters are often paid by weight.

Lucily we had our house remodeled it was included in the contract but I couldn't believe what people threw in that dumpster when I wasn't around.

For all I know it could have been the contractors but their were bags of stuff that wasn't mine, TV's, wood. It was ridiculous and it made me angry.

If a friend of mine asked or a neighbor had few bags to threw in I would probably say yes. But if a friend dropped in bags without asking I'd be a little upset.

I would ask. You can rent those dumpsters for different things. We have rented them for yard debris only as well as yard and household garbage. Yard debris only meant that processed wood was not allowed and we would have been fined for it.
We rented a dumpster for yard debris a few years ago. Huge one as we had a big yard with very healthy fast growing laurel hedge. I guess our neighbor felt that since it was so big he could just add some tree limbs to it and we would not notice. He put them in the dumpster and then climbed into it so he could press them down/ hide them. He jumped out screaming. It seems he was allergic to bees. If he had asked we could have told him that one of the tree limbs inside had a big hive attached. He was okay but I bet he will ask next time. :teeth:

I wouldn't even ask. Other neighbors might see you and they may start putting stuff in. Even if they ask, it puts your neighbors in a tough position of having to tell them no, even if they told you yes.

Okay let me give you some advice from someone who was part of a family owned trash business for 13 years.

1st off- this dumpster more than likely is going to a tipping floor. Demo dumpsters never end up in a landfill, they are dumped in a large building, where they are seperated. If you put wood, concrete, roofing shingles, and household trash- it doesnt "matter" to the trash company, as they seperate it before its being finalized.

2nd- a dumpster does not have a SET WEIGHT...they are rented by the yard- 15, 30 etc. They are CHARGED by weight. This is because when you end up at the landfill, incinerator, etc... the hauling company is charged by weight. You can put 3 tons in a 15 yarder or 3 tons in a 30 yarder, doesnt matter

3rd- if someone is "dumpster diving" they are in the wrong if they get hurt. Every single dumpster has a sticker on it that states "do not play in or around" and most have a "do not climb" well give its impossible to get into a demo roll off without climbing- if they get hurt- its their issue not yours.

4th one thing you may not realize, with the amount of rain that has been going on in the east coast- that dumpster that would normally weigh in at 1.5 tons, could very well weigh in a 2 tons because of saturation of the material in it. Those were the best dumpsters we use to have...especially yard debrise...dirt get soaked- we get rich, becuase haulers do not pay for debris its clean fill..

Hope that clears up the confusion

Funny dumpster story. DH is now a PM for a construction company, but once upon a time (like 8 years ago) he was a site supervisor. We were in CA and he got tired of people putting stuff in the dumpster.

One day he came in (the site was in a business park) and there were bags and bags of trash that weren't from the job.

DH was so mad he opened a couple and this idiot had left personal mail in the bags. DH looked up his number and called and told him to come get his stuff out of the dumpster. He showed up that day and got it.

Always ask. If it's just one piece of wood I'm sure the neighbors wouldn't have a problem with it.

My X use to do this day in and day out from people dumping household trash into construction dumpsters...he'd call them and let them know that a bill was on its way- or they could come back to his tipping floor and pick the trash up...usually they paid the bill instead of coming and retreiving their trash

Most dumpsters are charged for by the pound, so anything you put in there, your neighbors will technically be paying for.

I wouldn't out anything into it unless I was told by the neighbor renting the dumpster that it was OK to do so.
