Dumb swim diaper question

Do they absorb anything? Honestly, we haven't been swimming all that much, and when DD #1 was swimming, she wasn't potty trained, but old enough to know not to go in it. So, this summer, DD #2 just turned 1, and not sure when to put diaper on if we go to the local pool....do I get her all dressed before the drive, but then what if she has to pee on her way there? Then the car seat needs to be cleaned or do those swim diapers actually absorb? And same thing for in Disney....do you get them dressed up in the hotel room, or down at the pool? Thanks.

I always waited until we actually got to tha water before putting it on, I didn't trust the absorbancy. I know they contain the poop but how can it hold urine if it does't take in water in the pool?

Don't know what to tell you other than that. Good luck! :)

They arent made to absorb any real amount of urine only solids. Thats why they dont get all soggy when in the water...

My daughter has been in swim class since she was 6months old, therefore I have lots of experience with swim diapers. They do absorb so I can't imagine any messy carseats on the way to the pool. Also, I ran out of diapers before and had to put her in a swim diaper while we went to Wal-Mart to get some. She was in it for 3hours+ and no wet pants, but the diaper was nice and wet when I did change it, I don't think we would've been safe another hour. At home I do put her in the swim diaper before we leave for class or the pool..but at WDW I will wait until we get ready to swim because I don't know how long it will take to get there, wait in any lines, find a spot to lay stuff out, etc.... :)

they leak! dh will embarrassingly tell the story of how he was carrying dd on his shoulders down to the beach only to get a nice warm trickle down his back... oops ;)

another tidbit of swim diaper information... the "disposable" ones are machine washable and dryable... they do not lose their "absorbancy"... although after about ten washings they tend to lose their elasticity on the sides... but heck, at a buck a piece (or thereabouts) ten wearings is better than one!

like I said..we've been using the swim diapers by Huggies for 18 months to swim class along with public and private pools and have never had an accident....I guess it depends on the baby.... :)

I realize you are asking mostly about pee but since you are new to the swim diaper just a bit of a warning about #2. They seem to be designed to just contain the #2 immediately after it has been produced. In other words change any #2 as soon as possible because the wetter they get the more they break up and it can be a real mess. Sorry for the grossness but I have had a few undetected #2 get pretty messy on us. :sad2:

Not a dumb question at all, and I'm glad that you asked. I was wondering the same thing myself!

Definately NOT absorbent. When my DS was 2, we were at Universal Studios getting ready to go to the Barney Show. Right before the show, he needed a diaper change. Since we planned to go over to the Curious George water play area right after the show, I figured I would just go ahead and put his swim diaper on. BIG mistake! I walked out of the Barney Show covered in urine. When we went to the water play area, I got soaking wet just to rinse my clothes out!

What I did was if I needed to drive to the pool, then they didnt go on until we were in the locker room. If it was a hotel pool, etc, then I put it on in the room and walked there. They do absorb a little bit. Keep in mind that it will absord the pool water first, so anything after that wont be absorbed as much. They do leak too-as we found out while eating at a ships diner. And change that #2 asap-its true what Minnie mentioned! Thanks to other posters on here, I learned about washing and drying them out too, saving us a lot of money since they arent cheap! Now if my son went in them, they went in the trash, but normally he didnt go in them (you can tell-be sure when you take them off your child is standing in the shower/tub in case any trapped water comes gushing out).
