Dumb question - kids shoes

What is the difference between a size "12 Toddler" and "13 Youth" besides the actual size of the shoe? Is 13 youth the next biggest size after 12 toddler? The foot size chart doesn't differentiate between the 2 - it starts at 0, counts to 13, then shows 1, 2, 3.

Shoe sizing for children can be confusing! Here is a good link from zappos explaining sizing:

Their kids' sizing = toddler sizes.

13 is the next size after 12, it's just that 12 is usually the cut-off point for the toddler styles and 13 starts more "big kid" styles.

If that's confusing wait till you have a girl transitioning from kids sizes to womens where there is a gap...supposedly kids 3 = womens 5 but it doesn't always work that way it seems like.
