Dumb question about NYC

I live in Manhattan. I do like it. But I will tell you this...I can't find a job for the life of me. And it's a VERY expensive city. I'm originally from Boston. I used to be able to get groceries for my partner and I for around $40 a week. You can't do that in Manhattan. I'm just putting it out there. The space issue isn't that bad....I mean 470 square feet isn't *too* small. Especially for the city. But I digress. It's very expensive to live here. I am a very chill and laid back person, but I complain about the living expenses quite often. Come on...$8 for a box of cereal?! Okay, I'm done.
Anyway. NYC is a great city to live in other than that. It's fun and there's tons to explore! Besides the expenses and the hobos it's a pretty cool place and you should give it a shot! :thumbsup2

Sorry just thought of something as far as your insulin goes - Have you been to your local town/city hall health office - they may have a wealth of info and ways to recieve your supplies for free or cheap. Couldn't hurt to check it out.

I'm a nurse so it troubles me to no end if/when i think of people unable to obtain NEEDED supplies or meds.

Also the American diabetes association may have help available.

Hey, MM!

Don't bother cutting and pasting at all! Use "Multi-quote" function. Just click on the button to the right of the "Quote" button. It has a single quote and a plus sign.

That's the function I was referring to. I just meant the post would've probably taken up an entire page had I used that feature. :)

Thank you for the info, though. It was very informative. :thumbsup2

I called my friend last night and told him that I more than likely wouldn't be moving there due to what you just said. It's an exciting idea, but, as he put it, you've got to give up a lot in order to get a lot to live there.....and right now I'd more than likely become one of those hobos you mentioned after a few months.

Gracias, Sue.
Yeah, I've pretty much tried everything I can think of. Most organizations/programs have loopholes that I tend to slip through as far as getting assistance goes. Since I can't even remember the name of my endocrinologist since it's been a long time since I've gone to him, most programs turn me away because I don't have the records to show what I need. Not to mention my needs have changed since my last records would more than likely show.

Okay :upsidedow - I forgive you ;) - let's make out. :flower3:

I don't think you'd like that too much. MM hasn't been feeling very well today. :rotfl2:

Nikki... 8 bucks for cereal?! :scared1: Duane Reade is your friend! Most cereals there are around 5 bucks a box.

I went into so many Duane Reades while I was there last year that I've officially become allergic to florescent lighting. :woohoo:

Simply click on that button for every message you want to quote, then click on the "Quote" button for the last one.

OT- sorry! Thank you for explaining this. I could never figure out how to quote multiple posts.

Sometimes it feels like Manhattan is just a bunch of Duane Reades and Starbucks and nothing else!

My vemon will wipe out anything - I'll risk it - for a good cause of course. :upsidedow
Pants optional!

Tonight I was given the opportunity to move to Manhattan (Chelsea to be exact). I won't get into too many details, otherwise I'll get all upset and whiny due to my current employment situation.

Anyway, I wanted to ask if anyone out there has ever lived in Manhattan. There are a few things that bother me about moving there.....
--The apartment I'd be moving to would be a little bigger than a 1/4 of the size of the place I live now (475 sq. ft.).
--I'd have to sell my car because there's no way I'm paying a couple hundred dollars a month to park it in a garage down the street from the apartment.
--I can't stand going to a laundromat. The person I'd be moving in with uses a laundry service which picks his clothes up, washes them, folds them and delivers them back, but I don't want to pay for something like that.

*sigh*
Sorry, this is just a big decision I need to make, and my alternative doesn't look too good. :guilty: The thought of living there is very exciting to me.....but not under these circumstances.

Hey,
Where is the love. Native New Yorker. Born and raised in Manhattan  Harlem to be exact. I'm in NJ now and can't wait to retire back to NYC.

Here are the good things.

  • Every bodies apartment is tiny.
  • I think it's the opposite of what other posters posted. You can find any thing you need for way below retail. We have entire sections of Manhattan dedicated to bargain shopping.
  • NO MALLS. You don't look like every one else because we have more than Gap, JC Penny, Macys and Limited. We actually have boutiques that sell any type of style you can dream up.
  • Actually restuarants that are not TGI Fridays or Olive Garden. See the mall explanation.
  • Theater, museums and live shows. some are dirt cheap (not broadway)
  • City does not close down at night. You want sushi and ice cream at 4:00 am, no worries.
  • A transportation system, while not the cleanest, very very dependable. You don't have to drive 'friggin 20 miles to get some milk. (I hate that about the suburbs)

Nope - those will have to go. :rolleyes1

Couture - name drop please?

And what are you doing up nosferatu?

*yawwwwwwn*
What do you mean? Aren't most people up at 6pm? :confused3

You want me to name-drop? Hmmmmm......okay: "Cathy!" :thumbsup2

I almost freaked out when I saw that there was an Olive Garden in Times Square. :scared1: I blame the tourists for that one. I did prefer the "mom and pop" off-the-beaten-path places over the more touristy ones. (With the exception of the Carnegie Deli. That was just fabulous. :thumbsup2) Too bad I can't afford to make the move. :sad2:

Duane Reade is my friend, but even $5 is ridiculous. My mom mails me boxes of cereal at 2 for $5 hahaha

Hi! Just wanted to say good luck with your move. You are so lucky! I wish I could live in Manhattan!

I was going to suggest the exact same thing. There are ways of getting your insulin with assistance. My neice has found resources through the local health department and the American Diabetes Association.

I am also insulin dependent and know it can be expensive. You also need test strips so you can monitor your sugar levels. There are several manufacturers of monitors that can help with that aspect. I hate to say it, but you may want to look into MEDICAID to see if they can help.

Best of luck.

Donna

Thanks guys. I appreciate your concern. I've decided not to go through with the move because of what most people I've talked to are saying about how new photographers wouldn't make it there with the state of the economy. (Lots of photogs in the fashion industry are apparently getting laid off as we speak.) I'd more than likely have to get 2 jobs, and I just don't have the energy to do that.

MM....I had no idea that you were thinking about moving to NYC! WoW! I know you got a lot to think about and how funny I was there last week! When Jon and I were leaving there, he said "There's no way I could live in NYC." Im the same way, I love to visit there, but no way I can stand living there. I gotta have my back yard and pool.:)

I have 2 freinds that live there, well actually, one them just moved back from being there 3 years. The other freind is working for some kind of event planning place while she waits for her turn on Boardway. She loves it! She was a former Miss NC that wants to make it big there...still not luck yet, but loves living there.....she does complain about the price of everything though.

Good luck with the thinking process...whatever you choose to do, Im sure it will work out. I can see your pic now plastered up in Times Sq in one of those good looking manly ads.....;)

Awwwwww......you're very sweet. A bit delusional.......but very sweet. :lmao: Thank you.

I would go live there without hesitation but only if I had a fairly large living space. Also, I'd need something to look at out the windows, as opposed to the cement walls that are outside of my friend's apartment windows. (Literally, the building next to his is only about 3 feet away which makes it feel a bit claustrophobic.)
