If I win an auction on E-Bay and want to pay for the purchase with a credit card through Paypal, do I need a Paypal account or is it the seller's E-Bay account that the payment goes through? Sorry for the dumb question, I read the tutorial thing on the E-bay site, but I wasn't sure.

You'll need to set up an account with PayPal. It's really simple, though.

If you want to pay through PayPal you have to create an Paypal account for yourself. Always check to see how the seller will accept payment. For your safety I would go through PayPal. You have control over how much is payed to the seller. It has been awhile since I purchased something so I am trying to remember. If you don't want to set one up an account check to see how else they would accept payment. Not everyone accepts payment through Paypal. I hope that helps.

Thanks for the info! One dumb question leads to another....
If I set up a paypal acct., don't I have to give them my credit card or bank acct. information? If so, how do you handle that--cc or bank acct info? And is that safe? Sorry, hope I am not asking questions that are too personal.... I'm just confused here.

I set up an account using a CC. I've never had any problems with it.

We have an account using either our CC or our debit card. We have never had any problems with it.

I set up a PayPal account using a credit card and a checking account that did not have a lot of money it. You can change what accounts or credit card you want the money to come from. I was nervous like you about giving out information but I have not had any problems with it.

Thanks, again. :D Guess I will take the plunge and set up an account.

Paypal is great! We've got it set up now with a CC, and they'll let you spend a certain amount that way before you *have* to add a checking account. We're about to get into a situation where we'll need to be verified (I think -- I'm about to take the plunge and try selling I *think*) so we're going to set up a new checking account *specifically* for internet purchases -- neither of us is comfortable giving Paypal all the information to our primary checking account.

Just a little more info here.. I have recently become a seller on eBay and although I "accept" Paypal , I can NOT accept credit card payments without opening a "business" account that entails all sorts of fees.. I have a personal account and can therefore accept cash transfers or echecks through Paypal.. In order for someone to "pay" me that way, their Paypal acct. has to be tied in with a checking account.. There are many, many, many sellers who accept Paypal but NOT the credit cards so the best thing to do would be to open a seperate checking acct. and place "x" amount of dollars in it for on-line purchases and then replenish it as needed.. That's what I did last year because I didn't want anyone to have access to my "main" checking acct. or credit/debit card..

Hope that all makes sense.. It's a little early in the morning here - LOL..;)
