My son has outgrown his small suitcase and is wanting a large duffel bag with wheels. Not looking to spend a fortune. Do you know a place to look or have a recommendation? How is the durability compared to a regular suitcase?

Meijer's has had them for $20 a few times this year. I picked one up on black Friday for $20 at Kohl's. Can't tell you the brand name. Our middle son just used it to go to DC with. It was nice packing it full and he still had room. It's like a duffel zippered onto the wheel base, this part zips up and he kept all his dirties in there. It's held up well for about six months now. We don't use it every weekend but it's been used a few times now, by the kids and my hubby.

I'm not sure how much DH paid but he got one at the local AAA store.
It's about 5 years old and held up very well made!

I have a Samsonite 18" rolling duffel that expands to 20" long that I love! :thumbsup2 I've had it a while--probably 6 to 8 years. The only thing I dislike is the wheels clack in the airport! You can hear me coming a mile away. I think the newer ones are much quieter. :)

This size is terrific, as it can be used as a carry-on--overhead compartments only, though. The telescoping handle makes it too stiff to be manipulated under a seat. *sigh*

LL Bean has great luggage. It won't be the cheapest you'll find, but your satisfaction is guaranteed forever.

I found one today at Kohls. It is a 30" that opens up like a suitcase and it was $31.99 after coupon and sale. Original price was $79.99! Thanks for the replies.

I got one at Walmart for about $15 or so. It is black and was zipped up into a small square but when I opened it up it was more than adequate and rolled nicely. It got me to Chile and back with no issues or damage (I can't say that for any other piece of luggage I have owned.)

I have one for you!!! I bought a rolling duffel from walmart for 20 dollars. I travel alot! 3 Washigtion Dc trips, 1 calaforina trip, Numerous road trips, so around 30 or so trips in the 3 years Ive had it. Its still in great condition and hasnt needed any repairs. It had enough room for a 2 week vaction (and souvineers).

I can understand why your son prefers a duffle to a suitcase. They are a lot more sporty and rugged in comparison. If bought from a good brand, both duffles and suitcases are equally durable. I stress on good brands because their products last you much longer and their customer service is also better. They just offer a better overall experience and are worth the extra dollars. For example, Briggs & Riley make durable, long lasting luggage and back it up with an incredible lifetime warranty that even covers damage caused by airlines free of cost. You could check out this upright duffle (http://www.briggs-riley.com/category/productDetail.aspx?id=22-inch-Carry-On-Upright-Duffle_UWD622) from their Transcend collection, which is currently on sale. It’s a great duffle to invest in and your son can continue to use it for a long time to come.

Eddie Bauer and REI both have nice ones- good quality, good size. They aren't cheap, but if you wait for a sale/coupon you can get a good deal. We always wait for that "Members get 20% off one item" coupon from REI- they are the best!
