You can pay in one lump sum in January by CC or by check. It doesn't have to be a CC. Although many who do pay all in January use a CC because of whatever attached rewards they may have for the card (Airline miles, etc).
If you pay monthly, then it must be set up as an automataic bank draft, either from your checking account or your savings account.
