Dublin flights

We live in the North of England and have been looking at flights from Dublin for a last minute trip we hope to take next month.
There is a flight from Dublin that connects with a Virgin flight from Gatwick, and it is the same on the return Virgin flight to Gatwick from MCO, then a connecting flight back to Dublin.
Is it acceptable to book this but just not take the connecting flight to Dublin on the way back and just return home from Gatwick?
Will luggage be reclaimed at Gatwick?
If we can do this, it may be a better option for us than to return to Dublin as we could just get a single from Manchester to Dublin on the way out, and catch the train from Gatwick to home on the way back

You would have to make sure when you check in for your return flight that you ask them not to check the luggage all the way through.

You won't be able to drop any of the flights on the outbound route however.

I would also leave PLENTY of time between arrival in Dublin and the first flight to Orlando. If you miss it, that's your ticket gone.

The plan is not to drop any flights on the outbound and to fly from Dublin. It was just on the way home.
We plan on arriving in Dublin the night before our flight and staying overnight in an airport hotel

So, given the above, the thought is that we could drop the Gatwick to Dublin flight on the way home - just ensuring our luggage is not booked all the way through, right?

Because flights originating in Ireland can be cheaper than the direct flights from the UK

Because even given the one way flight to Dublin, it is working out over £200.00 cheaper to fly from Dublin!!!

It sounds like a pretty hellish itinerary but it would help if you could drop the final leg on the way back.

Our bags were checked all the way through on our last indirect, but it was booked as one leg! If you do manage to do this though please let me know how as it could make for some cheaper holidays

Have you considered flying to Orlando from Dublin with Aer Lingus?
You clear US customs & immigration in Dublin which makes your arrival into MCO very easy.
Depending on the fare rules, you may find that the check in agent in MCO will insist on tagging your bags all the way to Dublin of that is what is on your tickets.

Airlines are not stupid & know full well that people have started to fly from European airports in order to benefit from lower fares caused by missing out on the punitive UK departure taxes , the practise is known as flying Ex EU.
In some cases you can save thousands of pounds if you fly business class with British Airways to the States but start your journey in a European city, Amsterdam & Paris are two of the favoured starting points for these journeys due to the frequency of flights to & from London.

If you read the small print on the fare rules, if you decide to “not take” or “miss” the final leg of the journey, in your case Gatwick back to Dublin the airline can charge you the full fare for your entire journey i.e. Dublin to Gatwick, Gatwick to Orlando & Orlando to Gatwick for breaching the ticket rules, remember they have your credit card details.
It is highly unlikely that the airline would do this but it’s not unheard of, I’m not trying to scare you into not doing what you plan to do but you should be aware of all of the consequences before you book.

There was a thread on another forum a few month back helping to find deals like this. Many were booking Upper class from Ireland for same money as Economy from Gat/MAN, around £1,000pp in August or PE for around £700, around half Gat/MAN prices . Families were saving £100's, some £1,000's.
Its not ideal but the savings can be massive going from Ireland (not just Dublin)

Hmmmm. It wouldn't be too much hassle for us to take the final leg back to Dublin TBH.
Looking at flights Manchester to Dublin and back, the returns are very little more than the single fare, so maybe we will just complete the journey and have a night in Dublin on return -extend our hols a bit
Aer Lingus to MCO from Dublin is still much more expensive than the convoluted route we have been discussing.

Lots of people have posted that they got great deals with Aer Lingus but I've never found anything reasonable for our dates. It's just the way it is sometimes.

I was originally looking at flying from Belfast as the flights were £400 return vs the next best 650 on other airlines. I can't remember why I didn't do it but I think it was because I couldn't price up or check times and dates for flights from here to Belfast. That being said, I would go for it if the opportunity arose again.

I see nothing wrong with your plan and with your attitude to incorporate the journey as an add on to the holiday I think you win with this whichever way you play it

Both our trips involved Boston which brought cost down. Relatives used them to and from Orlando, they not cheap (£700ish for August)

It never even occurred to me that it might just be the route.

They also only fly on certain days to Orlando as far as I recall (might be wrong) but that can make things a bit tricky if you are tied to dates.

We are one of those families.

We got Cork - MAN - MAN to Boston - Premium Economy

Then coming home

Miami - Heathrow - Upper Class

All for less than Manchester to Orlando economy if booked direct with Virgin.

Again we'll be checking out luggage off at Heathrow and have a transfer waiting to take us home.
