DH and I attended the open house at the new Smith Terminal at Detroit Metro. WOW what a difference! Although it is much smaller than the McNamara Terminal, it is very nicely laid out and very user friendly.

SWA is going to have 3 gates, 20, 21 and 23. There is no gate 22 and when I asked, I was told that 22 is considered a bad luck number in Chinese, kind of like our number 13. There will be gates only on one side, so the lay out is very simple.

There was free food, (hot dogs, chips, water, cookies) in addition to all the freebies given out by the airlines. I got a very nice handled coffee mug from Air Tran and United was giving out a beautiful coffee table type book about the history of the airline. There was a pilot there signing them and talking to the kids....very nice touch, United!!! Radio Disney was there, sponsoring a scavernger/passport hunt for the kids.

But the BEST part is that at the new Smith there will be an EARL OF SANDWICH, down by the AA gates! Life is good!!!!!

Do you know when it officially opens? We fly out on Airtran on Oct 17. Also, our flight leaves at 6:00 AM and we wondered if there are any food places open that early..like 5:00 AM?

Thanks!

I think the new terminal opens around Sept. 15th. From past experience taking early (very early) flights out of McNamara, the coffee shops and breakfast places (McD's) have always been opened when I get there by 5:30 a.m.
