On our first day we have an early dinner res at T-Rex. Magic Kingdom is open late that evening for resort guests and we may want to head over there after dinner.

We'll have no car and are staying at CBR. Would it be the best to take bus back to resort and then one to MK?

Take the CR bus from DTD and then walk over to MK. There is a great sidewalk, runs under the monorail beam. It takes about 8-10 mins to walk to MK from the CR.

Unless something changed, that is your only option with the bus system.

DTD---A resort---MK

Don't forget thier Downtown Disney bus also shares with the Polynesian and Grand Floridian after it leaves the Contemporary, so it might not always be the fastest route and in the past we have had very long waits for the Downtown Disney bus at the Contemporary.

OP is asking about coming TO the MK, not about going from the CR to DTD.
Your answer is the opposite of their question, and confusing.

True, but all resorts have long wait times at DTD. The bus to the CR is going to be the most direct. The bus to CR doesn't usually go to the Polynesian or GF first...so that isn't going to add time. So, if the OP wants to get to MK, taking the CR is going to be the quickest method.

The only other alternative is to walk or boat over to SSR and take their bus to MK. But, if you aren't familier with the area, you could get turned around. And I truly don't think it is faster than heading to the CR to begin with.
