DSLR suggestions?

I want to branch out into a dSLR..something entry level would be fine. Currently, I'm researching the Nikons and it's between a d40 and a d60..Is there a vast difference between the 2? I can save some money getting the d40 but don't want to "outgrow" it too soon either.

So, what are your opinions? What are your thoughts on Nikons? Would you recommend a Canon instead? TIA..
