Hi everyone,

I've got a studio booked at OKW for June 24-29 and my sister has decided to join DD and I. She has MS but doesn't use a scooter or wheelchair, althouth she does have some weakness in her legs.

I really don't want or need a HA room but am going to call to request a ground floor room if possible. Isn't there a number or a department to ask for regarding medical requests? Can you recommend an area that would be good for her? Just ground floor?

I've got a waitlist in for a standard view at BWV, same number of points, since that resort would have elevators but I don't think it's going to come through as we are getting close to our dates.

Thanks for any suggestions you have.

i am not sure I would call the special needs line as they may misunderstand or there may be a misunderstanding once the ressie gets to OKW.

We were at OKW this month and 2 weeks before we left DH broke his foot and was on crutches for the next 4 weeks. We merely called MS and explained we needed either a ground floor room or a building with an elevator. We too feared we may get an HA room when we really did not need one. We ended up on ground floor of building 46, our original preferred location request. :)

My wife puts her request in for a ground floor OKW villa when she makes the reservation. She also has MS and can't really walk up and down stairs, especially after a long day.

If you simply call and tell them you MUST have either first floor or elevator buildings for medical reasons, they will almost always accommodate you. You can always reiterate that at check in as well. We have had several trips where we had someone in an ECV, and each time they made sure we either had a first floor or elevator building unit.

Thank you, that is exactly what my sister is worried about. She even asks me to walk behind her going up stairs, to catch her if she falls. It's tough because it's one of those things, as I'm sure you know, is not apparent to those who don't know or understand the condition.

Thanks! I did call and explained it to them, they said the request is in my reservation and I'll definitely ask again at check in. I think I'll get there early, we are switching from POR that day, maybe that will help.

I wish I'd known she was going to come with us way back when I originally booked, would have gone for a different resort, but hopefully it'll all work out :goodvibes Really looking forward to this trip!

Frankly, as long as you can get either an elevator building or 1st floor, I think OKW is a perfect resort for people with mobility issues. When I had to have the ECV a couple of trips, I found it was so much easier to navigate OKW than other places. The lack of hallways was a big plus, and I loved that I could park the ECV in the living room to charge it, and it wasn't in the way because of the huge open space in there.

By the way, I would definitely try to convince her to rent an ECV for the trip from one of the off site venders. We found them to be very convenient (they bring it right to the resort and it's waiting for you when you arrive) and also quite reasonable. It will definitely make her trip more of a vacation and less physically taxing.

Thanks! That's a good thing to know. We had to rent an ECV from Walker Mobility several years ago for my DH, he tore some ligaments in his leg just before a trip, and get this - we stayed at an All Star! Talk about tight, good thing he's a good driver! I can see how it would be easier in a ground floor unit at OKW. If I can talk her into it, that could be a good idea! Thanks again.
