DS6 may need speech therapy

That is why it is best to get early intervention. The earlier you start, the better off he will be. Plus, it will help him later on with reading and phonics. That was my biggest worry and now he is reading 3-4 sentence/page books with just a little help. No way can I compare DS with DD at the same age. She was reading Junie B. Jones books in 1st grade. He is nowhere close to that. When we first started ST he was unintelligible! Now we can understand him completely, but just have to correct his sentence structure. Good luck and be patient!

DD10 has been in speech therapy since she was 3. She is not teased about going to speech-- actually there are several kids in her class that go throughout the week.

Make sure you work with the therapist and do the homework. This will take relearning a behavior.

Be thankful they do have this in place to help him now instead of him being ridiculed in HS or as a adult.

He will be just fine.

As a speech language pathologist in the schools, I am sad to hear that many of you have had to fight to get your kids into speech therapy.

Having worked in both school and private practice settings, I have to admit, kids make faster progress in private therapy. This is due to individual attention, and more time. Kids in schools usually have one or two 30 minute sessions per week. By the time the therapist picks the kids up from their classrooms (usually more than one class) and takes them back to the therapy room, settles the kids down, there are 20 minutes left for therapy.

If your insurance covers it, I suggest doing both.

Most of the younger kids love to come to speech therapy. In Kindergarten through 2nd grade, ALL the kids in the class want to come. I get asked, "When can *I* come?" several times per day. As they get older, they don't like to be singled out as much.

R's are the toughest sound to teach, and the one that the children have the hardest time with. I have 8th graders who are still working on that stubborn R.

It is nice to hear such positive comments and experiences with speech therapy!

I have the best job in the whole wide world!
