My son is at a private school that is very strong academically and has a very strong Academic Challenge/Quiz Bowl team. The academic challenge team is commonly referred to as the "nerd squad" at St. Johns and was voted as the most dominant team in the school. St. Johns is a school full of nerds and so the nerd squad is a big deal (75% of my DS' class are National Merit Commended or National Merit Semifinalist)
This years team just closed out finals at the first tournament of the year at Rice University and are taking home the first and second place trophies. My DS is very excited because he help his team (they had him on the B team so he could play every round) come from behind and tie the game on the last question by getting a toss up question and all three parts of the bonus right for 40 points for the tie.
This is a nice way to start the year for the nerd squad.
