My DS (6) needs to have adenoids out. He has had ear tubes three time, the most recent being in November! He woke up calmly and asked for me last time because I told him he would not be in any pain, just groggy. I want to tell him the truth about how he will feel when he wakes up this time so he can be prepared. He is scheduled for this coming Friday 2/24.
:worried:
Any experiences with this would be greatly appreciated ie: how your son/daughter felt after the surgery, pain levels, etc!
Thanks in advance!! :)

DS had both his tonsils and adnoids taken out when he was about the same age - maybe a bit younger. He had sore throat pain, didn't talk, vomited after surgery, and was spacey from the anethesia. DD also had tonsils and adnoids taken out (again same age) and although she vomited in the hospital, she was amazing when she came home. She was actually speaking that very night and sitting at the table drawing. Two different outcomes. I will say that they both rebounded pretty quickly. Although its a bit rough to go through, it made the world of difference health-wise. Both also had ear tubes.

My son had a combined tonsil, adenoid, and turbine surgery when he was 5. He did have throat pain and was out of school for about a week. He could only eat soft cool foods, ice cream, puddings, jello, soups etc for the first few days then heartier but still soft things like mashed potatoes by the end of the week... I was surprised how well he actually did. I think they may have even had him on a slightly stronger pain med then tylenol but nothing that knocked him out or anything. Hope that helps. Good luck!

I had my tonsils out when I got my adnoids, so I had a really dry throat and cotton mouth. I honestly don't remember any nose pain at all. :confused3 I was kindof young so that might have something to do with it.

My DS had his tonsils and adenoids out last may. We did have a rough few days. He had trouble waking up and vomitted a couple of times right after surgery. He had a bunch of mucus after the surgery for a few days that made his breathing noisy. He a rough few days of pain too. Hopefully without the added tonsil surgery he will be one of the ones to bounce back quickly. Good luck.

Thanks so much for the replies!! He's a pretty strong kid, and is aware of what it feels like to wake up from surgery, so I'm glad to know what to prepare him for!! Thanks again!!

My best friends daughter had her aednoids out a few months ago. She was 4 at the time.
It was an outpatient operation and she came home a few hours after. She was a little groggy but otherwise feeling good. The kids were playing and she even ate some McDonalds.

My younger DD had her adenoids removed last year. She acted like she had never had surgery by bedtime. It has really helped things health-wise.
