imagine you have 3sides to a triangle, what numbers 1-9 (only used once) would you need on each side to equal 20?

8, 9, 3...if you are using only 3 numbers. A little unclear of the question.

If you need 3 numbers on each side then I have no idea since you would need more than 3 numbers to equal 20....unless you can multiply, subtract or divide the numbers.

No - sorry I wasnt too clear - hard to explain

#+#+#+ (# this is used to start next side)
#+#+#+ (# that is used to start another side)
#+#+#+ (#that is used to start another side)

so the 3 corners use the same 2 numbers in the number equation
you have 9 numbers, 4 numbers in each number equation but 3 numbers are used twice

I really don't understand what you are asking.

Are you looking for the area of the triangle to be 20 and you have to compute the length of each side of the triangle?

I am not sure that I understand your question. But if you have to use the numbers 1-9, with an equation of A+B+C+D=20, and 3 numbers can be repeated...

9+1+8+2=20
7+3+6+4=20
5+5+9+1=20

The 3 repeated numbers in this case would be 5,9,1.

The last 2 numbers in the last equation could also be 8+2, 7+3, or 6+4.

Does this help any? Or am I way off in trying to understand the problem?

Do you mean that it is actually a pyramid - with one number on the first row -- two numbers on the second row -- and three numbers in the third row? Then the numbers on each of the three sides add to 20?

9
4 3
7 5 8

Like that?

or

5
7 4
6 3
2 9 1 8

would work if you needed to use all numbers

Nope - 1 side of triangle has 1+7+3+9 then we continue down other side 9+4+2+5 then final side has 5+6+8+1 which brings us back to 1
all sides equal 20- lay out the triangle - DH got the answer - thanks guys - sorry but w/out seeing this it is hard to explain

That's exactly what I did in my last post except I used different numbers.

5 +7 +6 + 2 then 2 + 9 + 1 + 8 then 8 + 3 + 4 + 5

There are multiple answers to this question.
