We leave for wdw on Sunday and DS's nails are falling off!!! He had a severe case of Coxsackie a few weeks ago. I don't know what I should do. I am afraid to take him to ped b/c I don't want to expose him to germs right before vaca! Ugh!

Can you call the doctors office, maybe seeing as he is a patient they can give advise over the phone. You could always ask for a mask as soon as you enter the office for him and sit away from others.

Surly you don't want to leave not knowing if all is well.

Do you have a nurse line you could call?

Looking it up, I see "Infrequently, the infection may result in temporary fingernail or toenail loss". Since there's no actual treatment for coxsackie, I imagine there's no treatment for this, either, except for patience.

I've had two nails off before, both due to trauma, and while it was WEIRD to feel the breeze on a part of me that is normally covered, there was no *problem* with it.

I personally would just call the nurse line, see if they have any advice on helping him with any weird sensations, but honestly, personally, I doubt I'd even do that. It's not an infection; it's the aftermath of one.

Poor thing !

I'd be calling the nurse line/ try to take him in before your trip.

The #1 thing that comes to mind is infection prevention in the nail bed.

If he's going with you to WDW I don't know how in the world to control that at Disney ?

Two of my son's and I have had that last year. When we went to our pediatrician he sent us to a specialty doctor. It was a five minute appointment. That doctor said that it's because we had a really bad illness and that happens at times. There is nothing that they can do. Check your child's nails, they are growing new ones underneath them, that is why they are falling off.
Hope this helps!!

This is a common side effect of this illness (Google it). Nothing to be concerned about. I would have hoped that your doctor warned you this might happen.

Onychomadesis was 1 characteristic feature in patients during this HFMD outbreak; parents and clinicians reported that their children shed fingernails and/or toenails within 1–2 months after HFMD (Figure 1).

My family had HFM back in December and I had it the worst. ALL of my nails fell off a few weeks later. It was awful, but nothing could be done. I'm sure your son will be fine.

Very interesting. My daughter had hand foot and mouth disease a month or two ago. I was not aware that a possible side effect could be loss of nails. I know that her feet drove her crazy after the blisters were gone when she had loose skin all over them. I haven't noticed anything with her nails though. I can't remember just how long ago it was, like I said, a month or two. I'll have to check to see if any of her nails are loose. Her cousin also had it, I will mention it to my sister in law too.

See, who says that I am wasting my time on here! :rotfl2:
