DS might have a nut allergy

Had a bit if a fright last night with DS. He had his dinner at his gran's after school - pasta in a pesto sauce. Immediately after he ate it he complained ot a tingling in his throat and mouth, and got a bit short of breath. Once he got home he complained of a sore tummy - then vomitted. I got home from work just as all this drama was unfolding.........made the connection with pesto - pine nuts, and gave him some piriton. He settled after about an hour.
Took him to the GP this morning, and he's being referred for allergy testing. Meanwhile we've to assume he has a general nut allergy, and got a prescription for an Epipen. He has other allergies like dogs, cats, hayfever, eczema etc but it is a bit of a shock for us - need to read all the food labels now.

i bet that was scary i hope your ds is ok, as you say you will have to be extra careful with foods now...at least they are all labelled well nowadays

Hope he's feeling OK today.

How awful - thank goodness he didn't react more than he did (although bad enough!)

My daughter had a reaction one to a medication containing penicillin so the doctor advised me she's allergic to this now. When I commented "is she really allergic - it was just a rash" he explained that 2nd and more reactions are usually much worse so they couldn't take the risk. I'd just assume that she would react the same the next time.

What a nightmare reading all the labels - although they are getting better.

I've lived with a nut allergy for 36 years.

The good news is that it is impossible to be allergic to all nuts.

The bad news is that so many food manufacturers use the cross-contamination warning as a get-out clause these days, food shopping has become a nightmare.

Also be careful with bird seeds, animal food etc as it can contain nuts...just to be ont he safe side for now.

Oh Cath - what a scare for you and your DS

Molly was diagnosed with a peanut allergy a year ago - it took us 18 months from her A&E visit to getting her tested but she was only very young.

We carry an epipen and have ones at Nursery etc. The Hospital trained us and the Health visitor trained preschool.

The bad news is that so many food manufacturers use the cross-contamination warning as a get-out clause these days, food shopping has become a nightmare.

It's a nightmare! - Molly cried yesterday at Nursery as there was a Birthday cake with a possible cross-contamination warning on it and they wouldn't let her have any. We probably would have tried her with a bit but I wouldn't expect (or want) anyone else to make that decision. They gave her some sweets instead

Thanks everyone.......he's fine now and he knows he might need to avoid some foods in the future. Been to the school and had to sign some forms giving my consent to someone administering the Epipen if he needs it. There is some staff in the school who have been trained in this, so that's reassuring.
