Two teachers are looking for daily temperatures, currancy exchange, map of area traveled, distances, etc.
Any advice?

There is a station on the TV in your stateroom that will give you distance traveled, temps, show maps, etc. Should get you a good start!

I don't know the exact info that was on the channel...

but on the stateroom tv... there was a channel that showed a map of where you had traveled... distances, knotts, wind speed, air temp, and I think water temp as well... it was really neat turning it on and seeing where you had gone! I bet he or she could get a lot of info from that!

Also, there is a shopping guru on the cruise who has posted hours in the navigator, I am sure they could get you currency exchange rates, as well as guest relations!

Ive also been looking over the Oceaneer Lab 10-12yr Navigators. There are a few that sound more educational - question & answer time with the captain, Pastabilities, etc

I have a map of the itinerary...

St Maarten uses the Netherlands Antillean Guilder (ANG) on the Dutch side and the Euro (XEU) on the French side, but merchants on both sides gladly accept the U.S. Dollar.

He can use this site to get the exchange rates...

The U.S. Dollar is the official currency of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The post office at Castaway Cay routinely conducts transactions with U.S. currency although the Bahamian Dollar is the official currency. The Bahamian Dollar is maintained at par with the U.S. Dollar.

It's 1185 nm from Port Canaveral to St Maarten, 113 nm to St Thomas, 850 nm from St Thomas to Castaway Cay, and 225 nm from Castaway Cay to Port Canaveral.

Note... a nautical mile is not the same as a statute mile (the kind of mile we're used to using). A nautical mile is equal to the distance of 1 minute of latitude (a minute is 1/60 of a degree).

1185 nm would mean traveling 1185 degrees of latitude??? Around the world a couple times over! It seems to me it would have to be a Minute of Latitude? I'd never heard the definition of a nautical mile before, but a minute of arc sounds about right (21600 nm around the world.)

You might also have him come up with some questions for the captain and officers if you attend their talk...it is supposed to be adults only, but we've never ever seen that enforced, and the kids often ask questions. People ask many technical questions about the engines, who waste water is handled, etc. It might be good for him to come up with something interesting beforehand.

My daughter had to do a journal in second grade as part of her independent study the week we were on a cruise in October. At each port, included with your Personal Navigator, is a detailed description of the port with history and all sorts of great info. The ship's channel is also good for current temperatures and distances traveled.

The journal will be great, my DD still loves hers a remembrance of that cruise! :)

The tv channel refered to is the "View from the Bridge" We had it on a lot while we were in the room changing or transitioning from one activity to another.

I know that it defeats the purpose of the journal for class but it sounds like you have enough information to take care of the "class work" ahead of time.

I do highly recommend that you do keep a journal of what you did that day. Its amazing how many details you forget in a couple of weeks, and especially months.:D Write a little bit each evening before going to bed. Take a small notepad with you so that as you plan out the next days activities that are listed in the Navigator. A piece of paper is easier to carry around than the Navigator.

Have Fun
