First off - congrats for having a child that is so interested in reading and math! You must be doing a great job and I wish the very best on your journey!
I think it is sad that some schools are behind in this area. We live in a rural area and I am very greatful we were so lucky. Many moons ago...actually 32 yrs ago...LOL, when our four started public school, they were tested in KG. Fortunately for us, the students who scored high and could read were allowed to go to first grade for reading period, where they were challenged. First and second grade, the teachers always provide work to keep them stimulated and they also benefited by helping other students.
Around third grade they started what was know then as: gifted and talented, with other teachers for that period. By middle school and high school is was much better, they were challenged by enrichment, AP classes and summer G&T programs offered.
Now, here we are, 32 yrs later, with 10 grands!!
It is a full time job keeping them challenged...
seems they get brighter and brighter each day
