First, let me say that I was all for him going away to school. This is a decision he has to make blah, blah, blah. So we let him make this decision (like good parents would) :p and he chooses to go to CALIFORNIA! My stomach hurts thinking about it. I really wish he had chosen somewhere on the east coast or somewhat closer. I'm trying not to put up a fuss, don't want to cause him to dig his heels in further. DH says I have to cut the cord, DS say to loosen the noose...:(

oh ouch.
But still, what a great opportunity. :)

doesn't make you feel better though, does it?

My DD is away her first year of college, I only have one and miss her so very much. She is doing fine, and I look so forward to the Holiday's more than ever. She has grown up so much and is doing fine. She also has seen alot, other kids being kicked out, one for palgerism (not a good thing). Some have financial problems. So she knows she has to work hard as it is a privilege to be there. I also planned my WDW trip around her now. So excited. We talked everyday through e_mail and instant mess. Wow years ago what did parents do with out computers......

He will be fine. You will be fine. I had empty nest so bad, but now I am so happy for her. Remember he is always with you, in your heart.. :D

2 years ago, our daughter chose to go to college in the southwest, 1900 miles away from her mom. She is doing fabulously well out there. I do think it's much harder on the parents than the child. Best of luck to your son...and to you as well. :D

When I was deciding about colleges I wanted a small catholic college. My brother did researchand came back to me and told me that perfect college for me was the University or Peurto Rico!LOL! He couldn't wait to get rid of me!

I know it is far...but just think of all the great trips you can take! Hang in there...my mom wouldnt let me go farther then Ohio!LOL!

:teeth: Funny thing about brothers ehh? Mine wanted to "pay my tuition" if I just agreed to go to the University of Texas in Austin instead of the University of Texas at Arlington because I would be able to get him "student ticket prices" to all the UT Football games...

I don't suppose you could sell him on California university of PA? My BIL went there. Not sure if name is exact, but it is near Pittsburgh.

I can only offer you my support. I went to a school two hours from home and still remember how my mom cried. She said it was tougher on my dad who grumped around the house for a couple months.

He will make the right choice for him and he will because you taught him! Get a good long distance plan...and maybe start planning a trip to meet in Disneyland!

Good luck!

Pam

Is he going to UC Berkley (Cal), or another school here in California? We do have several outstanding universities here. Just think of it this way, you can visit him! I'm sure the move will be a great experience for him, although I know it will be an adjustment for you. congratualtions on getting him this far!

Oh my, I was so worried my dd would pick a college far away from us. She didn't so I was lucky but I realize that someday soon she will leave and I am preparing myself for that day. I never want to hold her back in life just because I will miss her terribly.

Is he very firm on this choice. Is there, perhaps a school he likes almost as much that is only like 4 hours away. I, like you, wouldn't make my kids choices for them. But I also told my kids that if they were over 4 hours they would only be home on Christmas and the summer. I couldn't afford to fly them home and that was the limit for me to drive and pick them up. My dd was very seriously considering a school that was 9hrs away. After our 3rd trip there she decided it was too far. Four hours gives them total independence but allows them to still see their family and friends.
If he does go, just think, you can go ti DL once a year.

It sounds worse than it is I promise-My DS goes to college in South Carolina-when we dropped him off last August I thought my heart would break-but he loves it there and I have learned that I need to let me be his own person. Both of you grow from the experience, but it is hard at first. The funny thing was, his little brother couldn't wait for him to leave home-but he misses him terribly, spends hours on IM with him and can't wait for him to get home for visits. Forunately airfare from Denver to either Atlanta or Charlotte is not terribly expensive so he gets to come home at spring break as well as Christmas and summer. And you might be suprised-he did find a friend from near here and they drove home together for Christmas (this is surpring because there are only 8 undergraduates from the whole state of Colorado at Clemson)

A HUGE {HUG} for you, it's so hard, isn't it...I'm just sick about my DS leaving next year to go off to who knows what college.
I only have him. I try not to let on to anyone how much I will miss him. I keep telling myself, it will be alright, but I'm dreading the day.

Thanks for all of your kind words and for sharing your experiences. As several have pointed out maybe I will get to go to DL, never have been there before. It definately is a bittersweet time. Hugs to all of you!

DSteddom,
He has chosen to go to California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks. I've also sent you a PM.

Trish

It's a good 2 hours away. Could be three with traffic. You have to drive through LA.

{{HUGS}} sweetie. It willl be alright, I promise. My son went to a school almost 1400 miles away from our house and he did just fine. Your son will be fine, too.
