DS broke arm 2 weeks before our trip

We leave in less than 2 weeks for our trip to DL (wanted to squeeze in one last trip with all the 50th stuff before our AP's expire. ) So naturally one of my kids DS Zachary (6 YO) broke his arm today. He has a splint and we will be taking him in for a cast tomorrow (hopefully). I was wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation and might have some advice or tips on what he can still do.(ie what rides he can still go on) Thanks.

Same thing happened to my son 1 week before vacation last year! I'm not sure about rides, but I do have a suggestion for water activities. Go to your local medical supply store and ask for a medical grade latex rubber cover. I can't remember the name of it right now... anyway the cover has a pump that takes out air. A Vacuum type seal is provided from the pump that shrinks the cover over the cast so that the child may swim, bathe, or go on water rides!! My son used one on his leg and we even went to a water park. The time that the child may wear the cover is limited to about 20 minutes at a time due to the sealing nature of the cover. The cover itself is able to be used over and over, very sturdy, and easy to take on and off. Hope your trip goes well!

Have them put a Gortex liner in the cast!!! It will be waterproof then and he will be able to swim, shower and do whatever he wnts without worry. You will probably have to pay about $20 extra but make sure they put the Gortex in the fiberglass cast. Don't worry with covers. Just request the waterproof liner.

These sound like better solutions than what my friend did. Her DD broke her arm last summer just as they were heading to Ocean Shores. She had her stay away from the water as much as possible, but sometimes wrapped the cast (and hand) in a plastic bag. It worked OK, not great, but she was due to have the cast off by then anyway.

My sister broke her ankle 2 weeks before our trip. We just wrappped the cast as tight as possible. One of the good things though is that we had the characters sign the cast. They would make a big deal out of it. My sister was 5 and loved all the attention. We still have the cast to this day.

I think your son will still be able to ride all the rides. One ride that might be hard is Buzz and shooting the gun. Other than that I can't think of any thing. Have a great trip!

Thank you so much for the suggestions. This is a big help and releif that his whole summer won't be ruined. This is why I love the DIS. I will be asking about the waterproof liner when he gets his cast tomorrow. I never heard of this before last time one of my kids had a cast 2 years ago we had to avoid water and had a hard time bathing him.

Our 6 yo DD broke her arm before our trip to WDW last summer and the trip wasn't ruined at all. Thankfully, they put a waterproof cast on so she could still swim! It was awesome. Also, she was able to ride every ride she wanted and really had no restrictions.

oh my gosh...that just reminded me....when my daughter graduated from 8th grade, we planned a Disneyland trip with friends of the family...2 days before we were to leave, we went over to our friends house to check on their dog as they were out of town and my dd stepped in some hole (very deep btw) the dog had dug up and landed on her foot and it got fractured...and they couldnt actually put a cast on it till the swelling went down....all night I was up with her keeping ice on her foot so the swelling would go down...the next day we went to the doctors with fear in our hearts that she would say we should cancel our trip but they did put the cast on it and she said she could go we got her a wheelchair to make things easier as she had crutches and everything worked out great except for one terrible incident. still makes me even now...we went on Space Mtn....and my daughter was trying to get out of the rocket and as she is trying to get out, the cm put his hand out like he was going to help her and then dropped it before she could grab his hand and she landed on her foot...you want to hear about the screaming of the banshee mother I became?????i wanted to pound him on his head she started crying and he didnt even say sorry just stared like the idiot he was...hmph

DL probably works the same for rides as WDW does - they put warnings about turbulent rides on the park maps and on signs in front of the attractions, but it is up to you to read the warnings and decide whether or not to ride.
You should probably talk with her doctor for any recommendations, but the CMs will generally not prevent her from riding anything.

thanks sue...it had nothing to do with the ride...she was fine...the cm actually put his hand out so she thought he was going to help her and then when he put it down she lost her balance and landed right on her foot....she would have been fine if that hadnt have happened...this was a long time ago though, she was 13 and now shes almost 20

I broke my arm three days before my 7th birthday. It was broken in three places, nasty thing, just barely missed having surgery. Anyway, the entire time, all I kept asking was "does this mean we can't go to WDW, does this mean we can't go to WDW?!" Luckily for us, I didn't have to fly anywhere, otherwise it would have been a no. Back then it was the big plaster casts and they said it would have been too new to fly in. As it was, I was on strict instructions to stay in the wheelchair for as much as I could with a pillow across my lap that my finger to shoulder cast sat on (back to the "setting cast" that they were worried that long amounts of pressure would cause it to misshape). I was able to go on each and every ride (including space mountain) and had a great time. And got alot of attention! Couldn't have been a more "perfect" birthday trip for a 7 year old! hee hee!
With what they do with casts now days, I don't think you'd have any trouble at all. Go with the water covers or liners, though!

When I was in sixth grade, I broke my ankle in three places less than a week before a planned Disneyland trip. When my mom picked me up at school, the first thing I asked her was, "Can we still go to Disneyland?" I think I was more upset about possibly missing the trip than I was my ankle. I too had to wait for the swelling to go down, but got a cast a couple of days later. I was on crutches the whole day. =( Besides my little sister stepping on my exposed toe about a zillion times that day, I remember having tons of fun, and my trip wasn't ruined at all. I wrapped a plastic bag around my arm on Pirates and Splash, but other wise was good to go. Since your son broke his arm, I think he'll have an easier time since he doesn't need crutches. Have fun!

Well DH who took him said they didn't offer the waterproof casts as the guy didn't like them (had a few people develop rashes) so he didn't stock them. Worse he wouldn't even let DS have a color cast. So DS was just sad that he had a ugly white one as the ER people had told him about the color choices and he was looking forward to getting a blue cast. Oh well what can ya do, I am probably going to get some stickers or stamps to decorate it. So we'll be checking out the things you can put over casts to swim. Hopefully one of them will be an good alternative. Than you everyone for the advice and help.
