Hi...
My oldest DS (10 1/2) is not feeling well. He went camping with the scout troop this weekend and came home with poison ivy on his legs and this really bad rash on this upper torso, around his neck, and on his face. The rash on his torso, head area is nothing like the poison ivy, it's raised all over and sort of all runs together. Definately not a poison ivy.
Yesterday we went to the dr., she said "it's probably viral" keep giving him Benadryl and it will get better. She really couldn't pinpoint what or why the rash is.
WELL......the rash is no better, he now has a headache, stomachache, sore throat, and said it is hard to breathe deeply. My DH has gone over the deep end and insists the my DS be seen again today, and some tests be run, and they prescribe something for his symptoms.
Do you think we should be concerned, or is it just a virus running it's course?????

I suggest you give your Doc a call, describe the new symptoms, indicating you are increasingly worried about your child. When giving her the new symptoms.. please start with the breathing and sore throat.. as they seem to be the most serious.
Hope all is well soon.

If he is having difficulty breathing, take him to the ER now.

I hope that whatever is making your DS sick isn't serious. {{hugs}}

I strongly feel that when there is a breathing issue that is associated with ANYTHING, especially a rash, you should get him looked at again-right away. Stress the breathing issue when you call. Ask what virus produces these symptoms. I would try to get better answers.

I don't like to hear "it's PROBABLY" to anything when I take DSs to the doctor. If this doctor didn't know for sure, then how can she have treated him properly?? And especially now with his breathing problems. The breathing problem could be totally unrelated, but at any rate, it needs to be addressed.

Please take him back to the doctor. Call and tell them you'd like DS to be seen immediately. Not that I am telling you to lie, but STRONGLY EMPHASISE your concern so that they don't downplay it. If they give you a hard time then tell them you have no choice but to take DS to the ER.

Good luck and please let us know what happens!

When I couldn't get through to the doctor's once I put DS in the car and just showed up. I totally agree with the others. Honey these days you can never overreact.

I say go, go, go. If the doctor won't see him or if you don't like the answers you get then I would take him to the ER right away. My thoughts are with you and I hope your DS is well real soon.

Poor guy. I agree w/everyone else...take him back to the doctor. Trust your instincts.

My kids both had rashes and trouble breathing and it was an allergic reaction. Get him checked out again, it could be viral or something else or even a combination of things. Does he have fever??

TAKE HIM BACK TO THE DOCTORS NOW. MY 14 YR OLD SON JUST GOT POISON IVY ON HIS FACE HE IS EXTREMELY ALLERGIC HE WAS PRESCRIBED A CREAM AND GIVE A SHOT AND GIVEN PREDNISONE(SP) HIS POISON IVY WAS NOT THAT BAD NO BAD BOILS OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT BUT IT QUICKLY MOVED INTO SWELLING HIS EYE WAS ALMOST SWOLLEN SHUT HIS LEFT SIDE OF HEAD WAS ALSO SWOLLEN. IF HE IS HAVING A REACTION IT NEEDS TO BE ATTENDED TO IMMEDIATLY

Here's a {HUG} to you both.

We can never be too careful with our children's health.
Keep us updated....please.

I'm back with one more thought. Did they test for strep? A rash, headache, sorethroat and stomachache are what my kids get with strep. Could he have poison ivy and strep?

My son has bad reactions to poison ivy. A rash goes all over his body if he just gets a little on his ankle. I'm wondering if this could be an allergic reaction. I'd take him in, too. If it is allergic they could give him a shot to help. Good luck.

My thoughts are exactly the same as everyone else...if he's having trouble breathing you should take him in. I'd rather risk over-reacting than under-reacting. I hope everything is alright & please keep us posted. {{{hugs}}}

Here's hoping that you've taken him to the Dr's office and will come back and let us know!

Definitely not an overreaction!

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for your concern and words of wisdom. We went back in today, and saw the PA-C, instead of our regular DR., I actually liked her a lot better, and felt she was much more thorough.

She prescribed prednisolone for the rash, but felt the upper torso rash was unrelated. Her thoughts were that he has scarlet fever, and they did a throat culture, which she will culture, and not rapid read....so.....will know more on Friday...DH is still p/o that they didn't do this yesterday, but I'm just breathing a little easier knowing that DS will be okay.

Thanks again for your concern.

Stephanie

Glad to hear you went back! I do hope he feels better soon and that the throat culture will help them determine what is wrong wit your DS {{hugs}} to you both
