Dry, itchy eyelids

I have mentioned this to the pediatrician but my dd occasionally gets really dry, itchy, flaky eyelids. The dr. had prescribed a cream that cleared it up then a few months later told me not to use it as there were some reports of some serious side effects :sad2: . Anyway, sometimes I put on a little aquaphor which helps a little, but I want to be so careful because it's so close to her eyes.

Anyone out there experience this and can give advice?

Thanks!!

My son gets this fairly regularly (he is 10) especially when he is having his allergies. I find that using a good moisturizer for a few days helps.

My mom had this happen to her a few years ago and she ended up going to a dermatologist. It was some odd form of eczema. She used a cream for awhile and has never had another problem.

Does Johnson and Johnson make a child's or baby's moisturizer. That should be tear free. If not, the Purpose products (for adults) by Johnson and Johnson is for very sensitive skin and does not irritate eyes. I love their moisturizer.

I have this problem once in a while and at a friend's recommendation went to the Estee Lauder counter. They suggested Verite eye cream. It's expensive ($36 for small tube) but I use it every day and it lasts about 4-5 months. It's for sensitive skin and unlike other eye creams I have tried, it does not burn at all.

Well, you may be surprised that it is actually dandruff. When I was 12 or 13, I had the dry, flaky eyelids. It seems like I also had it around on my belly button. After a couple of months of using over the counter moisturizers and cortizone creams, my mom finally took me to the doctor. He said it was caused by dandruff and to just use a good dandruff shampoo (on hair, not eyelids). Sure enough, after a couple of days, it cleared up. I then used the shampoo about once a week just as a maintenance. My husband once had the flaky eyelids, I told him to go buy some dandruff shampoo and it worked for him too. I have yet to figure out how dandruff on the top of your head can cause your eyelids to get dry and flakey, but apparently it does. Hope this helps!

Wow, that's an interesting one! Now can I ask, could you see your dandruff? Because looking at my dd's head I don't see any, but that's not to say I won't give it a try!

Thanks for the replies, I'm writing them down and we'll see what works.

No, you could not see the dandruff. We had no idea that's what it would be. Matter of fact, the doctor didn't even check my head. He knew right off that's what it was. My mom kept asking if he was sure. Apparently he was because it worked for me....and DH when it happened to him. DH has fine, blond hair and he can't use most products because they flake in his hair. His hair isn't thinning, it's just short and fine and you can see the littlest thing in his hair and there was no evidence in his hair that he had dandruff. But, no joke, he used Head n' Shoulders for a few days and his eyes cleared up.
