Drop-side cribs banned!

I am glad I am done having kids.

I am 5' 1" there was no way I could lift my babies in and out without the lowering the side.

What are short people supposed to do stand on step stools? How many accidents will that cause?

I'm 5'2" and have a fixed-side crib and I have no problems lifting my baby in and out. How tall are these cribs you are using? :confused3

I'm 5'2' and always had to drop the sides. It's fine when they are little and the mattress is high, but when you drop the mattress to the lowest setting, how do you lay a sleeping baby without waking him/her? I didn't even breathe..lol!

I guess, in the name of safety, it's a good decision, but I've had 2 kids in a drop-side crib (with plastic pieces), and never had a problem. The crib was part of a recall, but all that meant was that they sent me some metal clips to put on. 30 seconds of my time, and the crib was fixed.

I'm not sure why they just can't redesign them? :confused3 I have some not-so-tall relatives getting ready to have children. I have a feeling our drop-sided crib may become a hot item. :rotfl:

That's just it... I wish we'd be privvy to the data that was used to make the decision. Why couldn't there be stronger/stricter requirements on the crib itself?? Like only allowing metal pieces - the article states weakened plastic caused some of the recalls...

ETA - we're done expanding our brood too... but like many others, have family that is expecting in the extremely near future.

I'm 5'2 and expecting #2 soon. I am not happy. Our crib has always had metal fasteners. Unfortunately my overzealous 2 year old jumped up in down in his crib one too many times and well....I do not feel comfortable using it.

That's supposed to be part of the new regulations too - wear and tear evidently were not accounted for in the past!

Credit this new ban on all the irresponsible parents who left the drop-sides down and walked away. I think very often people fail to realize how their own personal decisions regarding their own personal conduct, on the surface appearing to only affect their own family, instead actually affects everyone. Despite exhortations to the contrary, the American people have no stomach for a policy that would essentially hold the government faultless when a child is harmed because of something a parent did or didn't do. We Americans will hold the government accountable despite such claims to the contrary, and as a result, everything every parent does and does not do affects what our government must do.

This seems to tie the issue up w/ a nice bow, however the problem wasn't related to parents negligently leaving the sides down. The problem stemmed from the sides coming loose over time, allowing babies to push the side away from the bed and become trapped in between the side and the mattress.

Another knee jerk reaction by the government, saving us from ourselves. If only we weren't such idiots. :headache:

I have mine packed away nicely. Good thing I kept it. I'm short 5'1'" plus I have a back problem. I want to be able to enjoy any Grandchildren we are blessed with and the ability to watch them they are little.

I purchased the crib second hand in 1992. Two children have used it, and the sides are tight as the day I first purchased it. It makes me wonder if the crib companies along the years decided to save some money and the cribs are made in a less than desirable way now. It's really too bad. I love my crib and my high chair also. It doesn't have full baby constraints so it most likely has been recalled also.;)

I heard this over the summer. So we opted to not move our crib. We weren't using it yet anyway and the pack n play works just fine. Ours was a $99 cheap crib we bought for my son in 2007 and I just didn't care to take chances. Unfortunately, someone took it from our curb as I didn't think to make it undesirable. Hopefully their baby remains safe. I never used the drop sides anyway because ours was just too noisy.

On Little Parents, Big Charlie, they had a crib with a door. I don't know what safety mechanism it had, but if I could have found that crib in prior years, I would have bought it in a heartbeat.

just read about this online. It was causing 30 deaths a year

I believe it was 30 deaths in the last decade not per year.

And, honestly, it is very simple to check the hardware every so often, and make sure it's safe. Maybe I'm weird, but since my children were going into it, I took the time make sure screws were tight, and things like that. I would do that with anything.

I totally wait for the day when every infant will be sent home from the hospital in Government Approved Teflon (Fire Resistant) Bubble Wrap and there will be bi-annual surprise visits to your home from the Department of Parental Supervision and Control to verify that you haven't freed your kid.

JMO, but I believe that the design banned didn't cause any deaths - the poor maintenance and carelessness of the owners might have, but not the design.

Maybe we were just lucky with our infants, but we were neurotic about making their sleeping arrangements very safe, no matter where we were.
