Drop-side cribs banned!

Really? Have you looked? I personally haven't, but I do know that all of my friends (or at least 95% of them as I haven't asked every person about their crib) has a fixed side crib and we're a short bunch. No one I know spent a ton on a crib so they must be fairly reasonably priced.

OTOH, my crib was $800 (my mom bought it for us, as we were in grad school at the time and could never have afforded it) and it's a drop side. It wasn't recalled that I know of, BUT, it wasn't a brand name crib either, so I'm not sure that I would really be aware of it. My mom bought it from a local baby boutique and it was custom made. So while I like it and am still using it, since I have no idea if it were recalled, there is no way I would want to use it in 20 years for a relative.
Yes, I have looked. I am shopping with my sister, who is 4'11" and to date we have found nothing under about $500 that will work. They might be out there, but I haven't seen them, babies r us included.

Wow, how terrible. Like I said, I haven't looked, but I haven't had an issue using my friend's cribs and I'm only 4 inches taller than your sister. In fact, that friend is even shorter than I am. I can ask for the name if you think it will help, as I know that she spent less than $500 on it. And got it at Buy Buy Baby, a similar chain to BRU.

So because of 30 deaths...
I suspect the parents of those 30 children would be mortified that you'd (from their perspective) marginalize their babies in that manner.

And know that I'm not saying that I disagree with the point you made, but rather just that those parents have a far more heart-tugging story to tell, to defend their perspective, than you have to tell, to defend your perspective.

We don't have one of those here, but I am going to look for one close to us. Mabye they will have something that will work. We both have short limbs and long torsos, so I think that adds to the issue. It might be worth a trip for her to get a reasonable crib that will work.

Actually, whether a grandparent uses this piece of equipment or some other should be left up to the parent of the child. If you were my parent (or -in-law), you certainly would NOT be placing my child in a drop-side crib.
If my kids or their future partners have a problem, fine with me. They can hire a sitter.
Agreed.

If my parents or in-laws cannot find it within themselves to follow our lead in the care of our children, they will find that their time with them is restricted substantially and they will certainly never find themselves in a situation where my wife or I are not monitoring their conduct around our children.

So because of 30 deaths in 10 years drop side cribs which have been safe for the other 4 million babies will be banned. Between January 1990 and December 1997 515 babies died co sleeping. Do these who agree with this stupid ban want co sleeping banning as well?

A review of incident data from January 1990 to December 1997 linked adult beds to at least 515 baby deaths. Analysis of the deaths revealed four major hazard patterns:

* Suffocation associated with the co-sleeping of adult and baby.
* Suffocation where an infant becomes entrapped or wedged between the mattress and another object.
* Suffocation due to airway obstruction when the baby is face down on a waterbed mattress.
* Strangulation in rails or openings on beds that allow a baby's body to pass through while entrapping the head.

We became the dominant species without laws like this (fortunatly its not yet come over here) its not nice to think of but not every baby is going to live to a ripe old age you can't keep legislating every risk away because its impossible babies die, children die it has always happened and it will always happen you can not forsee every kind of accident happening.
It's been well known that cosleeping is dangerous, so most people don't do it. However, since the risk is caused by behavior, not equipment, it's not something that they can 'ban' as unsafe.

When we originally shopped for Sarah's stroller, we had a list of features that we felt were important. None of the lower priced strollers had the features that we required, so we ended up buying a Peg Perego Pliko Switch that we absolutely love.

I'm currently half-looking for a new vehicle to replace my aging WJ. So far, the only ones that I've found that fit our current needs are GM's Tahoe and Yukon.

My point is, sometimes you have to pay more to get what you need.

So we allow emotional appeals rather than facts to decide policies that effect everyone? I'm sorry, but I just can't wrap my mind around that being a good thing on any level and I think the very idea that it is somehow acceptable (or even beneficial) is a big reason our nation is in the mess it is at the moment.

Yes, and that sucks.

It isn't a good thing. What difference do you think that makes?

I could list a few dozen threads on the CB, just in the last few months, that I've participated in, where the overwhelmingly prevailing perspective was to "allow emotional appeals rather than facts to decide policies that effect everyone". Look around you; your neighbors, friends, co-workers, acquaintances, your fellow DIS members, etc., and perhaps even to some extent, yourself (myself) are a big part of the reason why things are the way things are.

and I think the very idea that it is somehow acceptable (or even beneficial) is a big reason our nation is in the mess it is at the moment.
I agree. However, the root cause is what must be addressed. Then efforts to address the manifestations will be worthwhile, rather than pointless wastes of energy.

You can't legislate unfortunate deaths away. Babies will die every year, we do what we can to minimise but really 3 a year in how many million? What about the 515 who die co sleeping or the even bigger number murdered by their mothers. Or who die of sids?

They will ship to you. We don't have a store locally now that we moved, but we still ordered the crib mattress for my youngest from that store and they shipped it.
