i wonder if anyone could answer this. our flight is due to land at sandford at 17.25 by the time we clear customs and get our car will it be still light ? having never been to florida before im a bit nervious about driving although ill have my tom tom i would still prefere to drive in daylight. Have to pay balance next week :scared1: i hope this holiday is worth it i could do so much at home with the money its costing, im sure it will be gettin very exited just over 2 months to go :dance3:

It Will Should Still Be Light
I Find Driving Ovr The Easyer Than Driving Over Here Once You Have Got Used To Driving On The Wrong Side Of The Road But The Drive From Sanford To Dis Is Usally Enough To Get You Used To That NICE STEADY 45MINS TO AN HOUR DRIVE
Yes It Is Worth It

When we were there last week it was still light at 7pm.

My DH says once you get used to the driving it is so much easier than in the UK.

You will never go on holiday anywhre else again!:)

PS put your satnav on as soon as you land - takes ages to find a signal at first!!

quick tip, when you get the car dont just drive off.familerize yourself with it.controals ext
Rout from sanford very easy its right at road out of airport then left about 3/4 off a mile onto toll road, then its a straight run,all exits well signposted,if haveing problems toll both operaters will help you with directions

Can I suggest that you use the 417 Central Florida Greeneway, rather than the I-4. It is a quiet toll road which will ease you in gently to driving Stateside. The I-4 is a very busy motorway. Leave the 417 at exit 6 (SR536/World Center Drive) and head west, following the signs for Caribbean Beach Resort. It's a very simple route. If you haven't already done so, I'd advise getting Steve Munns' map.

I took a flight with my baby daughter on our own this Feb, we where delayed so we did arrive in the dark, I worried for the entire flight about getting lost etc. All I can say is it was over nothing!!! The roads are so much easier, I got directions so knew exactly where I was heading (even better for you if you will have a sat nav) The car was a pleasure to drive, please dont worry about driving as it will just make you a million times worse when you arrive!!:thumbsup2

thanks for all your replies its made me feel a whole lot better about driving and yes i have the steve munns map superb:thumbsup2

Driving over there is easy, I was very nervous and I found it easy!! so much easier than here in the Uk. The cars over there are automatic as well.
here is a website for you, there is a driving section on it as well

just to echo everyone else thoughts, driving over there is very easy, everything is very well signposted and well in advance, im sure you will be fine. However if you are worried about driving when you first get their if its dark you are tired etc, i know some companies will bus you to your resort that night and then you can get your hire car the next morning, dont know if this would be an option for you??

Re: Driving - a couple of things I would like to add - firstly make sure you understand how to change from Reverse to Forward and Park on the automatic car you receive - I think you just have to put your foot on the brake pedal - but I didnt suss it out for about 3 days the first time I went.

Secondly most roads in the UK are built with safety in mind and if will allow you to travel fairly safely at twice the speed of the speed limit - hence motorways there are times that they say 50 mph but realistically you can go 75 round the bends of Newport in Wales due to the excellent design of the road - however in the USA when they set a speed limit they dont build in a big margin of error - if it says 30 mph as you exit a junction of the freeway dont try doing it at 55 as you will be caught out and have to correct your mistake - likewise dont try and do 75 to 80 on a 55 mph corner.

Never had a problem driving in FL. It depends on where you are staying, if you're at a hotel on or off site it should be fairly easy to get to. One year when we booked a villa at the last minute we had to travel 10 miles one way up the 192 to get the keys and directions, then all the way back down the other way and out on to the 27 to get to the villa, we'd been delayed at MAN for 8 hours and got to the villa for about 1 am. Make sure to get the zips and full addresses before you leave the airport and try to get a map as a back up.

The first time we came back I stalled the car 3 times coming out of the airport car park. Bloody manual gearboxes.

Driving with your tomtom will be a doddle, have a look on google earth you can have a good look around and you can even look at your route from sanford to disney in 3D,Also there is no place on earth like disney florida you will have a fab time:thumbsup2
