Driving without insurance?!?!?!?!

If Texans sound beyond peeved, it's because we are. Probably every single one of us knows someone who has been in an accident of this sort and has gotten no reimbursement because you can't track down an uninsured illegal alien. And the vast majority are uninsured. If they hang around for the police report, they give a false name/address and just never show up for court. If it's a bad wreck, they hotfoot it back to wherever they came from if they might face jail time. Such is life in Texas these days.

This issue is very dear to my heart. My husband's twin brother was killed in a head on accident at age 38 by an uninsured illegal who fled back home to Mexico shortly after the accident.

Yup. In Virginia, no insurance, no liscence. The Insurance Co. notifies DMV if there is a lapse and your liscence is suspended after a letter is sent to you notifying you of the lapse. This happened to me a few years ago. there was a mixup and my insurance was accidently cancelled. DMV let me know that I no longer had a valid drivers liscence! YIKES! I got it fixed right away, but I will never be without insurance again!

I have a question then, about your state and others that do not require insurance.
If you get hit by an uninsured driver, will your insurance policy cover the damages ? Are there clauses built in ? If not, then why would anyone carry insurance if they couldn't be prosecuted for an accident ?

As long as you have collision it will be covered, but you have to pay your deductible....It would be MY insurance company's problem to deal with going after the person that hit me...

I just wanted to clear something up about the uninsured driver.

If you are hit by an uninsured driver and want damage to your car (or other property) repaired and paid for you will need to have collision coverage. If you are hit by an uninsured driver and want medical costs paid, you need to have uninsured motorist coverage. Same thing for underinsured drivers (if they carry tiny state minimum limits but do much more damage)

You can also sue them for everything they're worth... but that might not be anything
