Driving to the Fort....I-10 closed?

ntsammy5 mentioned on another post that he heard that I-10 is closed,...any details on this? where its closed, what state, between what two exits? Any info any of you have is very appreciated.

Thanks Sammy for the heads up.....and just try and stop me from knockin' a couple back with you. I'll definately be looking for des' green mickey to stop by and say howdy....yall do the same in the cabin loops, oh yeah...and I'll have a green mikey on our GC too.

I-10 is (or was) closed in Louisiana between Baton Rouge and Lafayette due to an oil well fire near the road. word was it was closed till at least sunday so i'm not sure if it is back open yet.

WHEEW!!!.....thats west of me. Our last trip there was tons of construction, some on I-10, but more on I-75...its been a couple of years now, hopefully that'll be cleared up.

It closed late Thursday, early Friday. It was supposed to open last night, but I am not sure. My mom called me just before I left Friday to let me know. I was heading home to New Orleans for a couple of days from Ft. Polk. I took the back roads.

I have to say that there were few delays and the signs were excellent. There was no confusion. They did a great job diverting traffic.

As far as I know it opened on time. They were waiting on 2 things. First to put the fire out and second to inspect the bridge to make sure that it was not damaged by the explosion. It was by a section of I-10 that is elevated over da bayou. Driven it many times since moving to Fort Polk. If I hear otherwise, I will let you know.

Just heard that the state police will keep I-10 closed until at least Wednesday. Not sure why, I will let you know if I hear anything else.

If you are heading east from Texas, you head north on I-49 from I-10 and then east on 190. There are well places signs guiding you. 190 is a nice road. You will get back on 10 around Port Allen. Signs are there as well. Turns out LA for once was prepared and has had 190 set up as an alternate route for that section of I-10 for years. Finally someone thought ahead, although it was probably after something similar happened. Anyway, if you are heading west from Mississippi, you will be diverted in Baton Rouge onto N110 and then to 190 west. I recommend that if you are heading west that you get on I-12. If you are on I-10 in New Orleans instead of bypassing New Orleans, you can take I-55 N and then get on I-12 W at Hammond towards Baton Rouge. I did this and there was no traffic. I imagine I-10 would be a mess where it is diverted in Baton Rouge.

Good luck if anyone is passing that way. Like I said, I found no delays when I went through there Friday around lunch time. I also went back Saturday evening and found no delays.

Mamaloya- I'm good to go...I live well past Baton Rouge, so it wont affect me at all. But This will be great info for anyone east of anything from Lafayette to BR.

New update for anyone traveling I-10

It will be closed until Dec 4th. They are having trouble putting the fire out. Apparently traffic jams are occurring in Lafayette on I-10 westbound. People are booking hotel rooms for the night. This will be going on for a couple more weeks. I know a couple of back routes, so if anyone is going this way, let me know and I will guide you around the traffic.

I am no fan of I-10. In 2004 I was travelling on it on a quick weekend trip to WDW - half the road was missing due to a hurricane, it was the middle of the night, it was really dark, there was a raging storm, waves were crashing - it was something out of a Stephen King novel. Elevated roads over large bodies of water during bad weather - a bad combination, if you ask me.

Well, FWG, if we did NOT have elevated roads over large bodies of water, we would not be able to go anywhere, except by pirogue (peerow, a canoe like boat for getting around the bayou).

It beats the underwater roads we USED to have...darn gators kept eating our tires and crawfish kept coming in thru the air vents!!!
