Hello, just got back from a great trip to wdw. I want to warn anybody driving thru the niagara area up to west virginia about speeding. My hubby drove 5 miles over the speed limit, except for where I 79 goes into road l9 in summersville w. virginia, you join on at gassaway, just before beckley w. virginia.
There are police all over this little town area, we saw three doing radar on our way home thursday. On the way to wdw we saw 2, one was driving with traffic, and one doing radar, Watch out. AAA says obey speed limits believe them here, I think they have built this little town up with vacationers being caught speedling fees, lol.

Hi Debbie and welcome back!

Sounds like you had a great time (all except for the police) LOL Did your DH get ticketed? Hope not.:(

Would you drive down again and if so would you take the same route? Interested in hearing about your drive there and back. Tell us more about your trip!;) But you better go unpack first!! LOL

I'd like to hear about the drive as well, did you go straight through or stop along the way. WE are driving in June and planning on stopping twice (leaving Friday after work.) We will be careful through West Virginia.

Hi Allison:

We stopped once on the way there. We drove l2 hours and stopped in rock hill south carolina at a country inn and suites, making the second day 8 hours to orlando.

Coming home we left the polynesian to stay in ormond beach for one night to walk the ocean, we ended up leaving ormond beach at 4.50 a.m. pretty good, and made great time, no hassle thru jacksonville as it was a friday, we were too early for any traffic, and ended up driving straight home l9 hours from ormond beach. Got into hamilton at ll.50 p.m. but that to me is a big push, hubby did all the diving, but drives 12 hours a day for a living.

Hubby looked odd at midnight going into a convience store for milk in his shorts in 30 F temps, as it was going to be 97 in florida that day. lol

I would not recommend driving all the way down, I think it would take alot out of your vacation. We still had three days at home to relax etc. I kknow some people even take two and a half days to go down.

I guess it depends on how many days you have for your holiday. I always pick a motel that offers a complimentary breakfast for a quick start the next day, and on the road again between 7 and 8 a.m.

We drove down thru new york state, pennsylvania, on I 79 I 77 and I 95, not I 75, if there was any threat of snow we would go down I 75. The way we went is very beautiful, large treed mountains and tunnels thru the mountains.

The roads are two lanes going the same way with a large wide grassy, treed median then two more lanes coming the opposite way, you do not get the other car lights glaring in your eyes.

WARNING!! I used to live there. :confused3 There is a terrible speed trap there. Don't even go over the speed limit by 2 miles per hour. :scared1: They WILL get you!! And the fines are VERY HIGH!!! It is noted as the biggest speed trap in the US! After you go through Beckley, you can go a little faster. Just a warning!! Be careful!

Thanks for the warning...again as we're heading to Garden City South Carolina in Sept. and I'll make sure we stay within the limits....don't want the "smokies" out for us!:rolleyes1

As long as you don't go over the speed limit, though, you're fine (as opposed to fined). It's pretty country, and we frequently stay the night on the way back. It cuts quite about 45 minutes off the drive, even with the obeying the speed limit.

You are right, it is a beautiful state! :thumbsup2 The New River Gorge Bridge is a sight to see! :wizard: Summersville is a great place to stay too. It is VERY safe and the people are VERY NICE!! You can't beat it. (Just don't speed!! ) HAHAH:banana:

Bobsdisnemoney my DH was also told about Summersville by a co-worker of his....any information on a cheap clean hotel for a night and do you stay on the way down or on the way back? Thanks for any help!:) We're heading to SOuth Carolina this Sept!:rotfl:

Since I can not post links, where would I put up some info for state speed limits??

We drove down to Bellair Beach in April 2006, it was a 25 hour drive from home, Ladysmith, Quebec. The drive was great. We took our time and drove for the 2 days. Then after a week on the beach we drove over to Disney for a couple of days and then drove home. We'd stop at each state line let the kids get out and walk around etc. We loved driving down, plus an added bonus is the cost. Air Canada is ridiculous in pricing to fly down. We are going to be spending Christmas at Disney this year. Dec 23-31 and are driving down. We are planning on leaving here the 21st. Hopefully the drive in the wintertime isnt too bad.
