we are going to do the drive from ny to disney. My whole extended family has me strssed on how far the drive is ( dh hates to fly) we were planning on driving 13 hours one way and then contine for 7? please let me know your experences.
Now I am thinking to split it up over 3 days. I have a dvd player and lots of car games but I am getting nervous about the long trip. I have an aunts house in Va that I could stop and stay and it is on the way. she is 13 from disney . I do not know what to do.
I have not read the whole thread, so I apologize if I'm being repeative.
Don't worry about it. We drive EVERYWHERE right now because I just find it much easier with three very little kids and all the things they require (DS#2 has health issues and requires a lot). And this means ~1400 mile trips. The kids (we have 3 boys) at various times have been 2 weeks, 2 months, 3 months, 4 months, 7 months, 15 months, 20 months, 2 years, 3 years, 4 years. Here is what makes it sane for us:
We leave late afternoon/early evening. I rest up during the day and drive first. We usually get in a few hours of driving (no dvd player), stop, get out somewhere where the kids can run around and eat dinner. We then get 2-3 more hours of driving (still no dvd player) in before the kids get tired. We get out at a rest stop, let them run around for a while, work out all the kinks, and then they fall to sleep & DH with them. Everyone is dressed comfy, cozy clothes. This is where we make good time, the rest of the time we are trying to have a good time; the drive is part of the vacation. I drive until I'm tired, wake up DH. Switch drivers. I sleep while he drives. When he's tired we switch again. If we're both tired, we will stop; we will not risk anyone's life.
In the morning when the kids wake, we get out at a rest stop and wash up. We keep a bag with a change of clothes (two for the kids actually), toothbrushes, soap, etc. Then we go to a restaurant where the kids can get out and run around. Burger King is great for breakfast for this. Kids can eat there or in the car (kills more time for them if they eat in the car). We'll then break out the dvd player. We continue to stop every couple of hours to get out and stretch at rest stops, restaurants (we get out for every meal), points of interest. It does add time to the drive, but it makes the drive feel faster and much, much more pleasant. That is the most important thing.
We bring things that help keep the kids busy in the car. DVD player. Coloring books & crayons. Magna Doodle. Books. Books on tape. A few favorite toys & a few new toys (think cheap, like the dollar store). We play travel games. Have music for the kids. Gameboy. Travel pillows and blankets for everyone (ok dh & I share since whoever is driving can't use them).
I also pack lots of snacks. And plastic bags for trash. And paper towels. And baby wipes to wash up while in the car and clean up minor things. And lysol and febreeze. At every stop, we clean out (& up) the car. At every gas stop, there are bathroom breaks & diaper changes. Same with every rest stop we stop at. We also stop as soon as any kid says "I've gotta go"--they aren't kidding.
We have never had a rotten time driving & neither have the kids. But we do it often. The kids are pretty good in the car & all of us can sleep in the car.
Hope that helps.
