Driving in the USA

It's my first time driving in the states this December, what are the differences in driving over there? (Aside from the obvious) and what tips do you have?

mostly covered in the other thread

you will **** up the most in car parks and quiet residential streets
but will realise quickly, unlike driving a right hand in france, the fact you are on the opposite side of the car will help.

exits quite often are the whole lane, be careful on this (mainly the i4, but also on the 192)

and there is no way to look cool when you go to the wrong side of the car, pretending to check the tyres dosent fool anyone.

Really, as much as the Americans will probably get annoyed, my advice? Take your time for the first few days!

I drove for my first time over there in May this year and it took me a good few days to take in the different things. Wrong side of the road, automatic gears, turning right on red lights if clear, overtaking on both sides on the 'freeway' and just generally a different feel of driving.

But, honestly, once I'd gotten a few days under my belt I felt great and my confidence grew lots. I'd most certainly not hesitate to drive over there again on my next visit! Don't think I could do without a car now!!

Also don't forget when you get home that your car has a clutch!

I find it easier with a LHD automatic rather than the cars we have hired in Europe where you go to change gear and open the door instead!!

First time I drove I found this site really useful, it has pictures of all the major junctions from the airport to most major locations in Orlando/Kissimmee.

Google Maps Street View is also great for familiarising yourself with the airport etc.

the first time i was out in florida i looked for the hand brake and found it was a foot brake on the left hand side, but i could not work out how to take the lock off.
until i was told it was a small flap above it look like part of the dash board.
