We are moving from Texas to West Virginia in August. We have a 6 year old girl, a 9 year old son and in Aug. a 4 month old. Please give me ideas :lovestruc

I made my 8 yr old niece a care package for their roadtrip from Texas to VA last summer. In it, I put a seatback organizer (that I made from fabric she'd like), a state license plate game (that I made from fabric, vinyl and laminated cardstock), a book of madlibs ($ store- actually, the Five Below store had TONS of cheap travel games like checkers, tictactoe and finger mazes- I got her one of each), a create-your-own mug, and I think I included a pen and notepad for her to journal about their long journey. And some snacks.

We drove to/from Texas (from MD) last year with our four kids. I made little activity bags that they got when we entered each state. That kept them busy for a while and gave them something to look forward. We also looked up some of those silly stops on roadside america. It did make the trip a little longer, but the stops were fun. It was a long trip, but we made the most of it. This summer, we're driving to New Orleans, which will be *only* 17 hours. I have to come up with some new ideas for this trip:goodvibes

You could look up the books called Off the Beaten Path for those states you plan to drive through. If you have a good bookstore near you they might have these on the shelf.

You might also look up state parks off your route. We used to let DS run wild in a few state parks when we had long road trips.

Sugar Grove, WV...heard of it?

Yep, that's a beautiful area of the state not heavily populated though. Guess that's why the major employer in the area is there though. It will be a major adjustment if you are used to city life.

Don't now much about what to do on the way there, but there's lots to do (if you're into outdoors type of stuff) once you get there.

This will actually be our third time living there! We love camping, good place for it!

Very Jealous, would love to live in this area.

We too go camping in the area a lot and have taken my geeky son to the Green Bank Observatory a couple of times.

Not sure of the route you're taking, but if you're going through Memphis I've got ideas!

Where in Texas are you going from?

Sugar Grove, WV...heard of it?
No, but I looked it up on the map and it IS in a beautiful part of the state. We love it here and how fun that you've lived here before. We're up in Morgantown. If you ever get up this way, send me a PM and we can get together and talk Disney.

We live in Fairmont, WV - and I travel into that area a few times a year for work. I am a college recruiter for one of the colleges in the state!

I hope you have prepared your kids to live in a very sparsely populated area of the state! There isn't much around! BUT - it is absolutely beautiful!

If you ever have any questions feel free to contact me - I'm a bit of a WV dork :teacher:

Perhaps your kids will be a Knight of Lady or the Golden Horseshoe some day!

That's one of the cool things about WV, what other states offers knighthood for being a history geek? :lmao:

West Virginians and Texans have a lot in common actually!

Just be sure you take several hours to enjoy the State Capitol, the WV Culture Center and State Museum (it just had a several million dollar overhaul, and the Governor's Mansion!

And - in the Fall - you'll definitely want to take a trip on Cass Scenic Railroad!
Also - you aren't too far from Snowshoe Mountain - hope you like snow - Snowshoe had over 150 inches of natural snow base this year!!! I hope you like to ski!!!!

WELCOME to WV!
