First time to drive and wondering where to overnight on way. Biloxi or Mobile? If anyone has done this, could you give restaurant and hotel suggestions?

THANKS!

Where in TX are you driving from? We have such a large state.

From our area I try to make it to Marianna Fl for the night. If I get too tired, then I'll stop in Pensacola. I usually stay in Hampton Inns while traveling, not the cheapest, but usually consistently clean. The cheaper hotel chains (like Motel 6), have been hit and miss for me. It depends on the individual management. If petecaler has stayed at the Motel 6 in Pensacola, and is staying there again, it is probably a pretty nice one.

GOOD LUCK! We did the same from San Antonio last fall (our 2nd time driving) and my husband said that that was our last time driving. It's loooong when you have 3 kids and one grandmother.

We didn't get to leave SA until around 5pm on a Friday and spent the night at a great La Quinta in Lake Charles. It was a 2 bedroom-3 dbl bed suite with fridge and micro in it. Also had a waffle maker in the lobby with their breakfast service.

Seriously, with a family of 5, unless airfare is dirt cheap, driving is the most economical way - at least for us.

The first time we drove we went straight through to Biloxi and stayed at the Ramada that is right on the bay (across from ship that is docked there). Don't stay there - it needed maintenance badly and I didn't feel safe at all.

Thank's ya'll. We're coming from College Station too. I think we will stop in Pensacola at Shoney's Inn.

We've always flown too, and we have about a million and one miles on Continental, but my DDs (and DH though he doesn't want to admit it) are frightened to fly at this time.

I'm not looking forward to the loooong drive, but at least we will be seeing places we haven't seen before and the end result will be worth it.

Coming back we might stop through New Orleans for a couple days.

Thanks again.

Pensacola sounds about right. If you stopped in Biloxi you would still have a very full day of driving the next day. I like to drive as far as possible the first day and have a shorter car day the next day. Biloi may be a good place to stop and eat. The casinos are there which has spawned a whole lotta restaurants, otherwise your choices along the way are slim pickens till you hit Mobile.

You may also want to check out www.biddingfortravel.com and look at the prices people have gotten for rooms in Pennsacola on Priceline. Since you will only be laying your head for the evening cheap is the way to go. Bids for $35 at the Holiday Inn have been accepted. There was also a winning bid for the Fairfield Inn for $28. Fairfield is part of the Marriott chain and are very consistent but not alot frills but always clean.
