Has anyone done this? How long did it take you and where did you stop in between. Thanks!

From Abilene Tx to Tucson is 10/12hrs. From Tucson to Anaheim is 8/10hrs. Add your trip time to this. :confused3

It takes about 24 hours to get from Houston to San Diego, and I believe it's the same mileage to Anaheim. Getting out of Texas is half the trip! And the drive is a very desolate one - lots of desert.

I moved from Houston to San Diego 9 years ago, and we stopped somewhere west of San Antonio the first night (got a late start), El Paso, and Yuma. DH was driving a UHaul truck, so we had to take it easy. My mom has made the drive several times and can do it in 2 days if she pushes herself.

It also depends on what part of Texas you're coming from, it's a pretty big state (in case you hadn't yet noticed, hehe).

For example, I live near Dallas so the route I would take is quite different than the route someone may take from Houston or San Antonio. I choose to take what I call the Northern route thru Amarillo, Albuquerque, Flagstaff, etc as opposed to the Southern route thru El Paso, Tuscon, Phoenix, etc.

I have taken both routes, and find them to both be of comparable distance and time, however it's my opinion that the roads on the Northern route are FAR better than those on the Southern route. For that reason, we prefer the Northern route.

Another note, if you take the Northern route be sure to check weather in advance as the weather can drastically change very rapidly driving up the mountain to Flagstaff AZ.

Thanks we are driving from Houston. How long does it take you to drive it? We are thinking of driving the southern route to get there and then if the weather is good driving back the northern route.

Sorry it took me a couple days to get back to you. From Dallas it usually takes us about 20 hrs. I've done it in 18 but it's really about a 20 to 23 hr trip in my opinion - depending on your speed and number of stops (if you're coming home the Northern route you may want to consider a stop at the Grand canyon).
