Just moved to Pittsburgh recently and am planning a trip to WDW in January. This will be my first driving trip in years and my first from this direction ever.

Wanted to check that the I79/19/I77/I26/I95/I4 route is the best way to go. Any hints would be appreciated.

Thanks

The only hint I can give you is: FLY!!!!!!!! :thumbsup2
You gotta be a (DIS)nutt to drive! :rotfl2:
(Looking at my map, your route looks good.)

Not sure where 19 comes into the mix, but 79/77/26/95/4 is the way to go. We used to drive from eastern Ohio yearly. It is very scenic down I77 with quite a bit of traffic in the Charlotte and Jacksonville areas. 16 hours would be about right.

I79/19/I77/I26/I95/I4

That is the exact route we take. Of course, if someone knows a faster route, I'd be thrilled to hear about it!

I'd love to do that but the kids and I are taking my old college roomie down for her first trip. We're being budget travellers for this trip and driving is cheapest. When DH gets to go we like to fly.

Thanks for all the replies. That looks like the route we'll take! :moped:

That is the "best" route to take. But a word of warning. When traveling south on Route 19 in West Virginia, be very careful in and around the town of Summersville. Biggest speed trap in the world. The local police will stop you if you're 1 mile over the limit. It is a major revenue generator for Summersville. Don't get caught there...just drive the speed limit and make up your time later if necessary. Have a great trip.

We drive from Ontario, crossing at Queenston-Lewiston, I190 to I90 to I79, then taking the route you mention, and love this route. Everyone I know also takes this route as it is scenic, the traffic isn't too bad and it's the quickest. The only thing is, 19 is through the mountains in WV, which can be iffy when there is a snow storm, because of the long hills up and down. The first time we took this route, we left from Ontario (about 45 min. south of Toronto) at 4:30 am, and by 8:00 am at the NY-PA border it started snowing, a major snowstorm, and we made it to Pittsburgh by 10:30 am on very bad roads, and ended up getting a hotel there until the next morning. The day after the storm, one lane each way on 19 was clear where the tire tracks went, DH is a very good driver and we didn't have a problem, but he had to be very vigilent. Finally, when we got past Beckley, it was warming up and the roads were much better. We left Pittsburgh at 8:30 am and drove straight through to Ocala, Florida, where my parents were renting a house, arriving around 2 am, with only very short stops to gas up, use the washroom and pick up food to eat while driving. We didn't want to lose a day of our vacation! By the way, thanks sif for the tip about Summersville - we had no idea, and luckily have never gotten a speeding ticket on this route.

This is also the route I take. I would also agree about snow in Jan. along Rt.19 but it takes off several hours of travel form going to Charleston and down. One more tip about Summersville, when you think you are out of town you are not, watch the speed limit signs and take it easy until you cross the bridge on the south side of town.

We've driven from Pittsburgh a couple of times. In fact, we'll be leaving for WDW on 18JUL07. The above route is the same that we take. We think that it's the best. 16 hours is about right. Have a great trip!

The strange thing is that I'm originally from WV so I knew about Summersville. It has been that way for years. However, I never went to Disney World until I was an adult and had moved away. :sad2: Therapy and frequent trips are helping me get soothe my sad inner child.

That's definitely the way to go (I'm in Pittsburgh as well). 19 used to be even worse when it was 2 lanes, but a few years back they made it 4 lanes and it's a nice drive.

Also consider flying. Right now on Southwest you can get a round trip (January 20-27, 2007) for just over $100 per person. These were Non-Stop flights as well.
