Hi, we are driving from ny last week in January and was wondering if anyone knew of places we should definetely NOT stop at night to rest. I've heard south of the border is really bad we are thinking of sleeping in north carolina. Also are the roads down bad or are they like the highways thru new york. thanks

When you get through Washington DC, things open up alot as far as the roads go. It's not a bad trip, really. We stopped in Fayetteville NC - it was slightly over half-way from Northern NJ. There were plenty of hotels to choose from, and it seemed like a nice area. We will do that again this January.

I agree, once you're past DC it's a breeze! There are plenty of places to stay. I would definitely not consider South of the Border!! Call me a snob, but it looks like just about the TACKIEST place....well.....south of the border! Or north of the border either! The first time we made the trip south (we drive CT to SC at least once every year) we couldn't wait to see South of the Border, since there are signs for it WAY before you get to it, and when we finally saw it, we just looked at each other and said - "THAT'S IT??????" Funny!:D :D :D

Definately agree about South of the Border. We stayed there one night because of all the hype about it and it was AWFUL!! Would never stay there again, Also, if you are going at a time of the year that schools and colleges have off (which it sounds like you're not) I would make reservations at a motel before you leave home. My DH drove down one time, during a school vacation time of year, and couldn't find any place to stay. He almost was going to pull into a rest stop just to be able to close his eyes but finally found something outside of Orlando, and that was after driving for hours and hours from NY. Anyway, have a great time!:)

i've got a question related to this topic:

approx how many hours is the drive from NY to Orlando?

my bf and i prefer to drive in the daytime only... we both have trouble driving long distances at night.

anyone have suggestions on the best way to break up the drive?

We are driving from CT in 3 weeks!!!! I have researched the journey and think it will take about 20 hours. We plan to leave at about 2am sat. 12/22 to get through NY and DC before most people start their holiday travel. We will drive about 15 hours to SC and stop in Santee which is right off I-95. That means only about 5-6 hours the next day to Orlando! On the way home we will make 2 stops (Savannah and Maryland). We booked at Best Westerns because they offer free breakfast ($60-70/pernight) and we can cancel up "til 4pm the day of. So if bad weather or fatigue hit we won't lose any money to cancel. Check some of the travel web sites for more info. I liked www.lodgings.com and www.expedia.com Good Luck!

We drove from upstate new york ( about 60 miles from the city)--we left on a friday at 4:30 pm. and arrived in orlando on saturday 1:00 p.m, on the return home we left orlando at 12:30 pm on a tuesday and arrived at our house on wednesday 8 am. Of course we drove straight through only stopping for food, gas and potty breaks. So alittle over 20 hours for us.
we have heard that lumberton, north carolina is a good place to stop, its a few miles past south of the border or Florence, South carolina which is alittle before south of the border.
We did not find the drive too bad--of course the whole family cheered when we reached florida but no one cheered when we came back to New york!

Wow, only alittle over 20 hours from upstate NY! The web sites I visited said 20 from Hartford. Good news, thanks!

What exactly IS south of the border?

BTW, I am driving from DC in a week, and we plan on stopping in Savannah GA about 10pm. Any suggestions? We were thinking about the Westin (we can valet park the car, which will have all our luggage so it seems safer that way than a motel parking lot) and they have heavenly beds which sound good. Rate is $70 so it seems okay (plus resort fee and valet).
